"You are so gorgeous. That hair compliments your whole look" I smiled at my new boyfriend. He smiled at me. It was electric. Nothing sexual. Just very casual. I just felt a thunder pass through me. I just got out of a bad project. I could use a little compliment. I didn't feel like myself at all. I walked into my studio. My first client was waiting there. All dressed up in contemporary fashion clothes. Questionable? Yes. Did I say no to the photoshoot? No. I mean, who walks into a place thinking those clothes are appropriate? Anyway, I can't judge. I faked a smile.
"Hello. You look amazing." My assistant stared at me. My admin stared at me. My manager stared at me. Basically, everyone stared at me. I was not sure.
"Oh. I know" I looked at my assistant right in her eye. She just sighed. I don't usually say anything to clients. I won't even make an effort to fake a smile. But today. Today, I complimented someone. Maybe the effect of this morning. I smiled at myself.
"May I know what I am shooting for?"
"It is a magazine photoshoot. We booked this over a month ago. They wanted to go for a garden theme. He is our client. They need a minimum of 6 shots—all full-coverage"
"Let's do this. Hello, I am Cynthia. Today, we will be doing a softcore version of your look. I will be here in another 10 minutes. You can talk about inspiration with your team" I swiped my camera off my admin's hand. I walked right into my room. Yes, the owner gets a room. Why did I compliment that client? I come off as cold all the time. Now they will get all giggly over their imperfect postures and expect me to understand their mistakes and laugh it off. Ugh.
"What happened there?"
"It is none of your business. Also, why are you late?"
"I don't have a client today"
"I worry about your career. I shouldn't have chosen my best friend as my work partner, I guess"
"You guess?"
"I heard that you smiled and complimented a client today. What was that about?"
"I just complimented. No big deal. You do it all the time. You must have walked into this studio and threw a big smile at my manager. I bet 10 bucks" She actually grabbed a 10-dollar bill out of her pockets and laughed again. Continued again.
"Here you go. You are right. I smiled at your manager. He smiled at me too. That doesn't justify your act"
"What do you want to know?"
"I want to know the reason"
"Okay, Today I walked out of my apartment. My guy complimented me. He said something about my hair and how it looked good"
"Oh, you are smiling. Big deal."
"It is a big deal. But this one is not a big deal. It was just a compliment. Did it contribute to my compliment? Yes, It did"
She started laughing at me. I couldn't control it. The cold spin-off is completely a facade for my clients. Not to her. She knows me in and out. I smiled at her.
"Okay, Sit down. He actually is kinda cute. I will tell you that. I really needed that compliment. Does my hair really look cute?"
"Aww, my baby is smiling after a long time. It does. Your hair is your best accessory. I love it"
"I just take good care of it always"
"I know. We all can see. So, you are good?"
"I am good"
The one compliment from her new love was kind to her heart. Her whole day was made.
