THE BLUE QUEEN
SHE WHO BRINGS THE
WINDS OF CHANGE
*
A reminiscent retelling of the life and rule of Queen Selaena Maeralys-Targaryen in Westeros; a supplemental history written and annotated by Prince Aemond Targaryen for members of House Targaryen and the Maeralys Family.
*
Much like Aegon the Conqueror himself; the true start of Selaena Maeralys' rule of the Seven Kingdoms is an unclear topic and heavily debated throughout the land. Even now, 5 years since she reached the end of her long rule in 197 AC, at the age of 68. Princess Rhaenyra's branch of the family would say it was when she had relinquished the crown and swore to Selaena upon her first arrival to Dragonstone*, when unknown to most she had begun pulling the strings.
(*Many dispute this event had ever taken place, as some claim Rhaenyra held a look of discontent after Viserys' announcement. Though as I myself was present for this event; I can confirm she held no such look, and held one of pride instead while being the first to kneel after the King.)
Most Great Houses of Westeros are in agreement that the moment King Viserys named her his heir was the day Westeros was in her palm; as she was already a Queen in her own right, and knew how to rule a Kingdom. Selaena had ruled over three city states in the Northeastern reaches of the Valyrian peninsula, which were miraculously left unscathed by the Doom. Through means still unknown to myself, or other family I spoke with; she was able to keep her Kingdom a secret from her Valyrian relatives across the Narrow Sea, until she had deemed fit*. It was plain enough for a fool to see the young Queen had more than enough resources to take the Throne by conquest if she desired. No one had wanted to make an enemy of such an unpredictable force**.
(*I came to discover just over year into her rule that the only reason Prince Daemon had come to learn about a remaining dragonlord family, was from whispers she asked to Lord Corlys Velaryon to spread. In her own words shared with me, she had known it was her time to head West.
**The true power of the forces in the remnants of Valyria still remain a mystery, no travel or trade from Westeros is permitted to any of the three city states of Mantarys, Elyria and Tolos. Only a sliver of power was seen during the rebellion of the Greens and the Faith. We may never know what truly happens in such a place, as the current rulers (who shall be discussed later), both steadfastly uphold Selaena's wishes. Few are permitted to travel freely, I myself had the opportunity to visit multiple times in my life. It is now something of high honour throughout the branches of House Targaryen who do not originate from the Homeland.)
By the Queens own beliefs, as shared to me once before long ago; it was when the crown of Jaehaerys was placed upon her head by Prince Daemon before the small folk who had delivered the crown to her. There, she believed her rule truly began. For in the eyes of the people, she was their one and only Queen. Many who had taken witness were ones who had remembered her generous deeds upon her first visit to the city. Where under the King's nose, she had snuck into Flea Bottom and began handing out free meals to any who desired; so which solidified her as Queen to the common folk.
Those deeds had continued, for it was something Selaena had been viciously passionate about until her death. Soup kitchens were now aplenty throughout the city, and no one ever went to sleep without having their fill. In the beginning, she had worked at many herself, and for that many small folk throughout the Realm knew what she had truly looked like. As opposed to mere drunken gossip shared in taverns of her true nature, she had made an effort to speak with as many of her people as she could*. The true faces of prior Kings and Queens and their family, including my own before her ascension, were unknown to most. The royal family had always kept to themselves behind their walls of the Red Keep. Selaena however, kept herself busy in the early years of her rule, and not just with soup kitchens.
