Here are some key things to know and consider when planning your trip:
Entry requirements:
Visa: Many nationalities can enter South Korea visa-free for short stays, typically up to 90 days. However, it's important to check the specific visa requirements for your country.
K-ETA: Travelers from visa-exempt countries must apply for the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) before departure.
Language:
Korean: The official language is Korean. Learning basic phrases like "안녕하세요" (annyeonghaseyo - hello) and "감사합니다" (gamsahamnida - thank you) can be very helpful.
English: While English is taught in schools, proficiency varies. Major tourist areas usually have English signage and some English-speaking staff.
Japanese and Chinese: Many schools in South Korea teach Japanese or Chinese. That doesn't mean everyone knows these languages, but there is a high chance you'll meet someone who does.
Currency:
Korean Won (KRW): The local currency is the South Korean Won. Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have some cash for smaller establishments and markets.
Transportation:
There are various transportation methods in South Korea, even some you wouldn't think of! Check out the previous transportation method chapter in this book!
