Speechless, I stood in the hallway as a suitcase and a few bags lie scattered on the floor.
"Mam?" I called out, my voice tinged with confusion, echoing through the empty space.
"Come sit down," she instructed, her tone carrying a weight of seriousness as I made my way to the sofa.
"What's... what's going on?" I questioned nervously, uncertainty gripping my heart as I settled into the seat.
"I've found us a new apartment... it's tinier but it'll work," she revealed, her words lacking the reassurance I sought, prompting me to demand the truth.
"Tell me straight, mam," I urged, my voice carrying a mix of concern and determination, unwilling to settle for anything less than complete honesty.
"Fine! They're kicking us out, I haven't been keeping up with the rent and-." She sighs, clearly frustrated by the situation.
Speechless at the revelation, I struggle to process the sudden turn of events.
"You... you haven't been paying rent?" I manage to utter, disbelief coloring my words.
"Not really... it's fine because I've a friend who's letting us rent a room," she explains.
"Where is this place then?" I ask.
"It's around an hour and a half away," she responds.
"What about school, my friends, my job, my sibling?" I ask, my voice filled with uncertainty and concern.
She scoffs, rolling her eyes, "if you mean Aiden I said you weren't aloud 'round him, he's bad for you since-"
"Don't," I say sternly, cutting her off, unwilling to entertain her judgment.
"What about my siblings then?" I press, seeking answers amidst the chaos of the moment.
"You'll still be able to see them, just travel," she says nonchalantly, her actions speaking louder than her words.
"I've cleared out your room, we'll be off soon, and I want your phone... you don't tell anyone about this... I mean it Aurora. Steve's got you another phone, I've already called Samantha to let her know you won't be working," her instructions delivered with a mix of authority and secrecy before she exits, leaving me to grapple with the weight of her decisions.
I freeze as my breathing becomes slow and unsteady, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Shit," I mutter to myself, the weight of the moment sinking in as I quickly make my way to my room.
I pull out my phone, fingers trembling as I dial Aiden's number, seeking comfort in his familiar voice.
"Angel? You alright?" his concerned tone reaches me, offering a lifeline in my moment of distress.
"Ah... not really," I manage to mumble out, the words heavy with emotion.
"Right, deep breaths, d'you want me to come get you?" his offer of support echoes through the phone, a gesture of unwavering care.
"No... no, just... meet me at my dad's Thursday afternoon, I'm sorry," the words catch in my throat as I sigh.
"Wait-" he starts to say as I hang up the phone, the tears now streaming down my face, my back against the door, seeking solace in the quiet of my room.
How fucked up can my life possibly get?
