The cozy scene of Joey and Aoife's at-home date night set the stage for a relaxed evening. With the guilt of not being able to join Gibsie this weekend weighing on my mind, the atmosphere carried a mix of warmth and boredom for me.

As Shan lingered downstairs for a good five minutes, I eventually made my way down to find Joey rummaging through the cupboards.

"I don't get paid until next week. Which leaves us with exactly.. eighty seven euro and thirty cents of the next six days." He said, counting the cash in his pocket.

"That's good, right?" Shan spoke up.

"It should work."

"You know I'd help if I could-" she blurted out looking guilty as I took a seat at the table next to Aoife. "But he won't let me get a job."

Joey held up a hand, signaling Shan not to take on blame. "Stop, don't even think about it," he urged. With a wince, he added, "Check the fridge, will ye?"

As Shan opened the fridge, it revealed its emptiness.

"Freaking cunts," Joey muttered under his breath.

I dashed upstairs to my bedroom and yanked out the box labeled 'Emergency funds' from under my bed.

Counting the cash inside revealed a total of €1,200. I decided to take out €250, tucking the rest away for later, before heading back downstairs.

"Darren was never the same again, and neither was our father," Joey shrugged, just as I entered the kitchen, the money tightly clutched in my hand.

I can't lie, I missed Darren. I missed following him around everywhere and playing dolls with him, but could I forgive him for leaving us?" I pondered aloud.

"Do you guys have someone you can call? A relative or family member?" Aoife chimed in before Shannon could speak.

"Nanny's eighty-one, she's too old and fragile too-"

"Me, Shan, and Rory have each other, that's it," Joey cut her off, his tone flat.

"Not anymore, you have me, all you," Aoife replied, squeezing Joey's hand and looking at us with a sad smile.

They were both quiet before Joey pressed a kiss to her knuckles. "Christ, I love you," he muttered softly.

I'd heard Joey say those three words to Aoife many times, yet it was always one of the most beautiful sounds I'd ever heard.

"Him admitting his feelings in front of another person was hard for Joey. He'd only done it in front of me a few times, but to do it in front of Shan was a whole new step.

"Okay, I am starving, and I know you three must be too, so I'm going to make a food run to the chipper, it'll be my treat," Aoife said as she clapped her hands together, smiling.

"Aofie, I told you-" Joey began to say, but she cut him off.

"My treat," she warned with a glare.I  tried not to let my laugh slip as she added, "now, are you coming with me?"

"Yeah, I'll come. You're not driving alone in the middle of the night," he muttered, getting to his feet.

"I'll be a minute," I say to Shan, following them to the front door.

Aoife gets in the car just before I stop Joey at the front door.

I take his hand, slipping the €200 into it just before bolting upstairs.

"You're a wanker, you," he jokes as I flip him my middle finger.
