Gibsie had been acting mysterious the whole car ride, throwing winks and grins my way but keeping his plans for my birthday under wraps. I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of surprises, but with him, I had to admit, it was exciting. "Trust me, princess. You're gonna love this."
We drove for a while, eventually pulling up to a small, secluded park with an old, abandoned building. The sun was beginning to dip low in the sky, casting everything in a warm, golden glow.
"Up here," Gibsie said, gesturing to the building with a smirk. "It's not as sketchy as it looks, I promise."
I laughed nervously, but there was something about the excitement in his voice that made me trust him completely. We climbed up the creaky stairs, each step making me more curious. When we reached the top, I gasped.
The roof was lit with soft, twinkling fairy lights strung along the railing. There was a blanket spread out on the floor with a picnic basket, a bottle of something bubbly, and two glasses waiting for us. The view was breathtaking, the horizon stretching out endlessly before us, with the sun setting behind the hills, casting everything in shades of orange and pink.
"Gibsie," I whispered, genuinely taken aback. "You did all this?"
He scratched the back of his neck, looking uncharacteristically shy for a moment. "Yeah, well... I wanted to do something special. You deserve it. Plus, it's your birthday, so... why not?"
I smiled, my heart swelling with warmth. "It's perfect."
We sat down on the blanket, and Gibsie pulled out a variety of snacks from the basket—sandwiches, chocolates, and strawberries. We spent the next hour eating, laughing, and sharing stories while watching the sunset slowly fade into twilight. The stars were starting to twinkle in the sky when he handed me a small box.
"One more surprise," he said with a grin.
My hands trembled a little as I opened it, revealing a delicate silver necklace with a tiny crown pendant. It was simple but beautiful, the kind of gift that meant more than words.
"I saw it and thought of you," he explained, his voice softer now. "Because you've always been my princess."
I felt my breath catch in my throat, my eyes stinging with unshed tears. This was Gibsie at his most genuine, no jokes or deflections, just him. And it made my heart ache in the best way possible.
"Gibsie..." I whispered, touched beyond words.
He moved closer, his eyes searching mine. "Can I?" he asked, gesturing to the necklace.
I nodded, unable to speak. He gently took the necklace and fastened it around my neck, his fingers brushing the skin at the base of my throat, sending shivers down my spine. When he was done, his hands lingered for just a second longer than necessary, his eyes locked on mine.
The air between us felt charged, like every moment we'd shared had been leading up to this. My heart pounded as he leaned in, his breath warm against my skin.
"Happy birthday, Aurora," he murmured, his voice low, full of something deeper, something that had been building between us for a long time.
Before I could respond, his lips were on mine, soft but firm, moving with a gentle intensity that made everything else melt away. It was as if the world around us disappeared—the lights, the stars, the breeze—all of it faded into the background as he kissed me.
I kissed him back, my hand moving to his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my fingertips. Everything about the moment was perfect—no more secrets, no more hiding.
When we finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against mine, both of us breathing heavily, but smiling.
"I think this might be my best birthday ever," I whispered.
He grinned, his eyes twinkling in the dim light. "Well, it's only going to get better from here, princess."

We had just finished up the last of our snacks and wrapped ourselves in the glow of everything that had happened. Afterward, Gibsie took me on a long drive with no real destination in mind, just the two of us and the quiet hum of the road. The world felt distant, like we were in our own little bubble. Beyoncé played softly in the background, and the music felt like the perfect soundtrack to the night—calm, comforting, and just what I needed.
Eventually, we pulled up outside my house, the headlights illuminating the front steps. Neither of us spoke at first, just sitting there, basking in the quiet. I didn't want the night to end, and I could tell from the way Gibsie kept stealing glances at me that he didn't either.
"Thank you," I whispered, turning in my seat to look at him with a soft smile. My heart was still warm from the sunset, the stars, and everything that had happened.
"You deserve it," he replied, smiling back, and then he leaned over, placing a soft kiss on my forehead. It was such a small gesture, but it made me melt. "I'll see you tomorrow... yeah?"
"Yeah, obviously," I grinned. My heart skipped a beat as the words slipped out. "I love you."
He smirked, the look on his face making my stomach flutter. "I love you too... I could hear you say that a million times."
"Oh, shut it, you dickhead," I teased, rolling my eyes playfully.
Without missing a beat, he reached out, his hand gently pulling me forward by the neck, and kissed me again. This kiss was deeper, more intense than the one on the tower. When he finally pulled back, we were both breathless.
"See you later, princess," he whispered, his voice low, almost teasing.
"See you later, joker," I said, smiling as I slipped out of the car and walked towards the house, feeling lighter than I had in ages.
I couldn't do I today, so I'd do it tomorrow.
