And just like that, everything snaps back to reality. The initial reaction hit hard, tears flowing freely, followed by a numbness that lingers for hours. I'd find myself motionless on the bed while chaos unfolded around me, the sounds of arguments and fights fading into the background. My dad's 'advice' was straightforward: move on and get over with it, so that's precisely what I did.
Aiden popped by on New Year's Day with my mam's ashes in a little urn he got me; he covered all the costs for her cremation. I must've thanked him a thousand times during that hour. He even got me a new phone to stay in touch and check in on me. Declan joined him a few days later, but that was pretty much it.
I dragged myself out of bed for school; my mam had sorted out my entire education at Tommen, so I had to return. Joey was due to show up this morning to update them on what went down while I was away, which is something, I guess.
"Hurry up, Shan, I really gotta brush my teeth," I urge as she swings the door open.
Today marked Shan's debut at Tommen; Marie had finally pulled her out of BCS due to the relentless bullying that had escalated beyond tolerance. It should've happened ages ago, but when does Marie ever truly listen?
"You're looking great, Shan," I compliment, a smile breaking across my face as she returns a small grin.
"Are you sure I'll be fine?"
"I promise you'll be okay. I'll be right there at school with you, so if anything goes down, just come find me," I reassure her as she heads towards Joey.
"Hurry it up, Rory! I gotta pee," he calls out, prompting a chuckle from me.
I swiftly brush my teeth, splash my face with water, and step out, with Joey rushing past me to use the restroom.
"Here," I offer Shan, passing her a €10 note.
"No, Rory! Joey just handed me 20; I don't need any more," she declines.
"If you don't take it, Shan, I'll just give it to Ollie, more Legos for him," I tease, knowing how much Ollie loves his building blocks.
"More Legos mean more aching feet," she jokes, accepting the money I slip into her pocket.
