The shock of her saying yes still lingered in my mind. I mean, I knew she would, deep down, but the reality of hearing her say it? Jesus Christ. It hit me harder than I expected.
Aurora stretched lazily next to me, her yawn contagious as we lay side by side, listening to the rain patter outside. "What time is it?" she mumbled, her voice soft with sleepiness.
I checked my phone, chuckling when I saw the time. "It's... Jesus Christ, it's 11:30." I tossed my phone back down, the hours slipping away faster than I realized.
Her eyes widened, a lazy smile playing on her lips. "We've been lying here for six hours?"
"Yep," I said, grinning at the disbelief on her face. "Right, princess, let's get you to bed. I'll probably clean all this up tomorrow."
She groaned, rolling onto her side and burying her face in my arm. "Ugh, do we have to?"
"Unfortunately," I sighed dramatically as she finally lifted her head, her hair a tousled mess from laying against me.
"Are you staying over?" she asked, another yawn escaping her as her eyelids fluttered, fighting sleep.
I raised an eyebrow, trying to hide my grin. "D'you want me to?"
"Duh," she replied, smiling like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I'll ask Edel if it's okay, if she's still up."
We pulled on our slippers and quietly made our way down the ladder from the loft. I misstepped, my foot slipping on the bottom rung, and Aurora clapped a hand over her mouth, trying not to burst out laughing.
"Shhh!" I whispered, chuckling as I pressed a finger to my lips, the sound of rain muffling our quiet giggles.
As we reached the yard, the rain felt colder than before, soaking into the fabric of our clothes. Aurora glanced up at the dark sky, rain droplets glittering in the light from the porch. "I love rain," she said quietly, her voice almost drowned out by the downpour.
"You're gonna end up sick if you stay out here," I warned, tugging on her arm.
But she shook her head, a mischievous smile on her lips. "Then I'll be sick. I'm staying out here and getting soaked, even if it's just for five minutes."
Before I could protest, she flopped down onto the wet grass, spreading her arms wide as the rain soaked her through. I couldn't help but shake my head, rolling my eyes with a grin. This girl, I swear, was something else.
She turned her head to look at me, her soaked hair clinging to her face, water glistening on her skin. "You want to lie down, don't you?"
I groaned, but I couldn't resist her. "You're impossible," I muttered, lowering myself down beside her and lacing my fingers through hers.
We lay there in the rain, staring up at the cloudy sky, the world around us fading as the cool droplets hit our skin. I turned my head to the side, looking at her, and felt something tighten in my chest. Without thinking, the words tumbled out of my mouth. "I love you."
