As Joey broke the silence in the car, his voice low, he questioned, "Why d'you do it? Get high, I thought you stopped doing that years ago."
"I don't do that shit often, only when I need it," I sighed as he pulled out his phone, the rain splattering the car filling the silence.
"How's she doing?" He spoke down the phone, clearly to Johnny.
"Good, she needed it." He replied with a sigh.
"I already told you," he snapped. "Ask her."
Ask her what?
"I'll be at yours in five minutes." Was all Joey said before ending the call.
We both get out of the car, walking up to the house as Johnny opened the front door looking annoyed.
"It's time to go Shan," Joey announced as her eyes widened with panic.
"Is it? Okay..."
"Yeah," he exhaled, letting out a heavy breath. "Mam needs help with the kids."
"She can stay, you all can," Johnny rushed out, looking at us, his expression a mix of concern and reluctance.
"No, we need to go," Joe stated firmly, wrapping his arm around Shannon and guiding her out of the house. "Thanks for your help, Kavanagh."
Shannon looked back to Johnny, whispering as I got into the car.
Lost in his thoughts, I was snapped back to reality when Shannon asked, "Is that what happened? Was she in the hospital all weekend, and we didn't know?"
Joe nodded solemnly as Shannon covered her mouth in shock. "Oh my god, she was all alone."
"She had him," Joe replied through clenched teeth, his grip tightening on the wheel. "He was with her, and he's home now."
"What are we gonna do?"
"I don't know. I don't know what to do anymore, Shannon," Joe shook his head in frustration.
"It's okay, you don't have to know. You're only eighteen," Shannon comforted, rubbing his shoulder as he let out a heavy sigh.
I stared into space yet again, yet this time I was thinking about me and my baby, the day I'd lost my baby. I knew exactly how Marie felt; she'd lost her baby boy, and I'd lost mine.
Shan snapped me out of my thoughts by screaming, "If you want to go then go! Go off and leave us! Go be with Aoife and have a wonderful life together; we'll protect the boys-"
"You can't even protect yourself!" He roared before adding, "I'm doing that, Shannon, me! I'm the one trying to soften the blows, and they just keep coming."
"Then maybe you and dad will both get lucky, and he'll finish me off the next time." She sobbed, her head dropping into her hands. "It'll save you the worry and him the energy."
