We were lying in bed, the soft hum of the night filling the room. It was around 1 a.m., and the stillness outside felt comforting. My arm was draped around Aurora, her warmth grounding me, but my mind was elsewhere. Her words from earlier played on a loop in my head, stirring a storm of thoughts I couldn't quiet. Just as I started to relax, my phone buzzed on the bedside table, jolting me from my thoughts.
Aurora shifted slightly in my arms, her voice barely above a whisper, still heavy with sleep. "Who is it?" she asked, blinking slowly as she glanced at me.
I picked up the phone, frowning at the screen. "I don't recognize the number," I murmured.
She extended her hand toward me, her fingers brushing mine. "Here—I'll answer it," she offered, her voice gaining a mischievous edge. I passed her the phone, more curious than cautious, wondering how this was going to play out.
She propped herself up slightly and tapped the speaker button, holding the phone between us. "Hello?" Aurora's tone was casual, but there was a hint of playfulness. "Who is this?"
A voice crackled through the line, immediately sounding impatient. "It's Lola. Where's Gibsie? I need to talk to him."
Aurora raised her brows at me, then responded smoothly, "He's busy at the minute."
Lola's voice became sharper, tinged with irritation. "Well... can you get him for me? What's he doing?"
Aurora paused, her lips curling into a mischievous smile. She turned to me, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "D'you want the real answer?"
There was a huff on the other end of the line. "Obviously. Hurry up."
Aurora's grin widened. "Well..." she started, drawing out the words for effect, "at this moment, he's cleaning himself up. We've been busy, in case you're wondering." She shot me a wink, her eyes full of mischief, and I felt my stomach drop.
Lola's shocked gasp echoed through the speaker. "What the— that's disgusting!" And with that, the call ended abruptly, the line going dead.
Aurora laughed, her body shaking lightly against mine as she tossed the phone aside. "That worked well. She'll stop now," she said with a chuckle, leaning back into my arm like nothing had just happened.
I blinked, still in mild disbelief at how easily she had handled that. "Jesus Christ," I muttered, unable to stop the grin tugging at the corners of my lips.
Aurora just smirked, her eyes still dancing with amusement. "She needs to piss off. Does she not understand the word 'no'?" she grumbled, rolling her eyes and settling back into the bed.
I could feel the tension melting away from both of us, the room falling into a comfortable silence. The soft ticking of the clock was the only sound now, and I thought maybe we'd drift into sleep, but then she spoke again, her voice quieter this time, almost hesitant.
