I stepped outside into the back garden, glancing up at the sky. Dark clouds loomed overhead, threatening rain at any moment. Typical Irish weather. I spotted Gibsie waiting for me at the top of the tree house, his silhouette framed against the soft glow of lights strung around the tree.
"You expect me to get up there?" I laughed, hands on my hips as I looked up at him.
He grinned down at me, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Get up here, Aurora! It'll be fun! Plus, I've got sweets."
With a dramatic sigh, I grabbed onto the ladder and started climbing. When I reached the top, Gibsie gently took my hand and helped me inside. I stepped in and paused, taking in the scene.
The floor was covered with colorful blankets piled in a cozy nest, and a small table in the corner held bowls filled with my favorite sweets—gummy bears, chocolate-covered pretzels, and those tiny candy necklaces I loved. But the best touch was the projector he had set up, casting twinkling stars across the ceiling, creating a warm ambiance.
"Woah..Gibsie, this is really nice," I said, a smile forming on my lips.
"Pretty impressive, right? I mean, the sweets were a must, obviously," he replied, puffing out his chest. "But this... this is the real masterpiece." He gestured to the star projector, trying to look serious, but I could see the corners of his mouth twitching.
"Star projector? Are you trying to woo me with cosmic wonders?" I teased, raising an eyebrow.
"Maybe. Or maybe I just wanted to distract you from the fact that I'm still wearing my rugby socks," he said, lifting his foot to show off the brightly colored socks that clashed horribly with his outfit.
"Nice. Nothing says 'date night' like those socks," I laughed, shaking my head.
He wiggled his toes. "What can I say? I have a unique sense of style. But seriously, I wanted to do something special."
The sincerity in his voice made my heart flutter a little. "Thanks, I really appreciate it." I stepped further into the space, feeling more at ease.
There was a moment of silence, and I could sense he was gathering his thoughts. He shifted slightly, looking serious. "So, I wanted to ask you something."
I tilted my head, curiosity piqued. "What is it?"
He took a deep breath, his expression earnest. "I know we've been friends for a long time, and I care about you a lot. I was wondering if you'd ah..want to be more than friends... like, my girlfriend?"
Shy Gibsie was the most adorable thing I'd ever bleedin' seen.
The air felt heavy, and for a moment, I didn't know what to say. I searched his face, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. "You really mean that?" I finally asked, trying to gauge his seriousness.
"Yeah. I just think we get along really well, and I'd like to see where this could go," he said, fidgeting a bit, a hint of vulnerability creeping into his tone.
I took a breath, the reality of the moment settling in. "Well, I mean, we've already been acting like we're dating for ages," I said, feigning casualness. "We're practically already there—minus the official title."
"Exactly! We share popcorn, sweets, and my terrible music taste. What more do we need?" he exclaimed dramatically, placing a hand on his chest as if he were about to faint.
"Right? And your mam already thinks I'm basically part of the family," I replied, trying not to laugh. "If this was a sitcom, I'd be showing up at your house for dinner every night!"
He laughed, shaking his head. "Okay, so we've clearly been in a long-term relationship without realizing it. So, what do you say?"
I smiled, feeling warmth spread through me. "Fine. I guess we're doing this then. Girlfriend it is."
"Good!" he said, relief washing over him. "You know, I was worried I'd have to go back to wearing regular socks to impress you. That's just too much pressure."
I rolled my eyes playfully. "Don't worry; the socks can stay, but the awkwardness has to go!"
He chuckled softly, the tension easing. "Deal. So, you're officially my girlfriend now? This feels like a job interview."
"More like a very casual job. I'm just here for the snacks," I teased, grabbing a handful of gummy bears.
"Fair enough. Just remember, if this job doesn't work out, I have plenty of room for a part-time best friend," he joked, nudging my shoulder.
"Perfect! I'll keep my options open," I said with a grin, feeling lighter as we settled into the easy banter.
The storm clouds above seemed less ominous now, the stars above us glowing brighter than before, hinting at all the possibilities ahead.
