Chapter 57

Bucky's POV...

I tried to protest when Steve dragged me out because I didn't want to leave without Mia but he insisted that Nat would get her. She'd gone back for her when Steve decided we were abandoning the mission, We got onto the other jet and they were quickly trying to get us to leave but I stopped them. "I'm not leaving until I know that Mis is okay." I demanded

"She's with Natasha." Steve assured

"We need to go, that's what Fury wants. He said they will wait for the other four to come out." Sharon interjected

"She's not responding, I need to know that she's okay, please." I begged Steve

"Her comms have been down for a while, no idea why but she can't hear you, and nor can Natasha. They must be blocking our systems." Sharon explained

"Where are Tony and Thor?" Sam asked, clearly trying to change the subject

"Other jet, they wanted to make sure there was room for you three and make sure the others get out okay." Loki told us

"We need to go, they think they are planning to blow the whole place up." Sharon urged

"Not until I know Mia is safe."

"She'll be fine, she's going to meet us at the compound with the others but we can not get ourselves killed. Mia is going to be devastated if something happens to you while waiting for her. Plus her dad is on the other jet and he will make sure she gets there okay." Steve tried again

"Fine but if she's not on that jet I...I don't know what I'm going to do."

I sat down and bounced my leg aggressively the entire way back to the compound. We were never able to reach anyone on the other jet which meant the theory that they were blocking our signals was probably true. I tried my best to stay calm and to remember that she's strong and she'll be okay but it was hard. The other jet came in about 10 minutes after us which did little to comfort me. Pietro and Wanda came out first with Tony and Natasha bringing up the rear. "Where's Mia?" I immediately  asked Natasha

"What do you mean? She was with you wasn't she?"

"No, you went back for her."

"I did but she was gone so I thought she found you. There was no sign of her and the computers were wiped."

"So where the hell is my daughter?"

"I have no idea." Natasha looked as stunned as everyone else standing there

"We're going back right now and finding her." I announced

"I agree." Tony added

"It's no use guys, the whole place blew up shortly after we left. One of our drones picked it up." Hill explained

"We still have to find her." I tried but I could feel my heart breaking

"It's no use, they leveled the place. It's basically a crater." Fury told us as he pulled up the footage

"It's Mia, we have to."

"We're going back even if it's to find her body. I'm not leaving her there even if it's too late." Tony told them sternly and headed toward the jet

I was about to join him when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. When I pulled it out it showed that I had one voicemail and it was from Mia. "She left me a voicemail," I said

"Listen to it, maybe she made it out and she needs help." Sam quickly said

I clicked play and brought the phone to my ear. "Damn it Barnes," she said sounding out of breath. "I fucked up, I should've left but it's too late and I know I'm not making it out of here alive. It's Oliver, the one from the club, he's after me. I'm going to go down fighting like you taught me. Please don't come looking for me, they won't take me captive, I'll die before that happens. I know I promised not to put myself in danger and I didn't mean to this time, I really didn't but I needed to destroy what was on that computer to make you safe. I just...I need you to know Buck that I'm sorry and that I love you. I love you so much it hurts and I just had to make sure I got to say it to you once. You've changed my life so much and I would have never been able to thank you for that. Please live your life without me and find happiness wherever and however you need to. You're so much more than you give yourself credit for. You're the love of my life, my soul mate. Please tell my dad that I forgive him and that I'm sorry and that I love him. I love you James Buchanan Barnes and thank you for loving me back. I'm sor...." her voice was cut off by the loud sounds of gun shots and I stood there listening to what sounded like her screaming as they killed her.
