Chapter 37

I went to go put his old arm up so I could take care of it later when my lab door opened and Steve walked in. "Hey Steve, what are you doing down here?" Bucky asked

"I could ask you the same thing?"

"Just picking up my new arm that Mia designed and had made for me."

"It looks great, you did an amazing job, Mia." Steve complimented and it almost seemed like he meant it

"What can I do for you Steve?" I asked

"I was hoping to find you alone so we can talk."

"Oh, um yeah that's fine. Bucky, can I meet you upstairs when we're done and we can go get that done?"

"Yeah, I'll wait up there for you."

I watched Bucky leave very hesitantly while looking between Steve and I several times like he was expecting Steve to get closer to me. "I've got stuff to do, what's up?"

"I've been doing some thinking and I've been entirely too hard on you since you got here and I'm sorry. Since you got here, I've consistently made mistakes regarding you and the first was sleeping with you right away."

"It's fine, Steve, is that all?"

"No, just listen for a minute please. I wish I could go back in time and get to know you first so we could've had a real chance at a relationship. Mia, I really like you and care for you. I know you and Bucky have been sleeping together but I'd like a do over, another chance to take you on a date and make a better impression. Nat told me how she pressured you to dress and act a certain way and that's the last thing I want. I'm sorry for how I've acted, I was mad and then jealous by how close you'd gotten to Bucky and even Sam. What do you say, can we try again?"

"You've got to be kidding me, I'm fucking your best friend."

"Yeah, but it's just sex. I can give you everything you want Mia, stability, love, a family of your own and you know how mad your dad would be if he knew you were with Bucky. Tony and I have had our rough patches but he would accept me with open arms, he'll disown you for even looking in Bucky's direction and you know it."

"I'm not interested in a relationship with you beyond professional at this point and even that is questionable. Buck may very well come tear your head off for even having this conversation with me."

"No he won't. He agrees that I'd be better for you because he only sees himself as evil and as a bad guy."

"So help him. For the love of fucking christ, help your best friend don't try to steal away the only chance he's had at a relationship in 70 plus years. Buck is good for me, and I want to be around him. You on the other hand...I've got no desire to ever feel your hands on me again."

I started to storm past him, but his next words cut me like knife. "He'll never be with you, not the way you want, and he'll never love you. He's not capable of it anymore and he's dangerous to you and to others. How do you know he won't snap and kill you one day when he loses his temper?"

I spun back around to look at him dead in the eyes. "He is capable of love and more than that he deserves a lifetime of it to make up for what he went through, for you. All of that happened to him because he loved you, he trusted you and he followed you. Do you even care? Bucky would never ever hurt me; he takes care of me and he's gentle with me. All he ever does is protect me. At least he's a good man, you may be Captain America but you're a piece of shit and he may have been the Winter Soldier but he's still so good and he's 10 times the man, no the person you could ever be. Fuck you, Steve Rogers." I spat at him

I didn't have time to react before I felt the palm of Steve's hand connect harshly with my cheek, sending my head snapping in the direction of his slap. My first reaction was shock and my second was to kill him but luckily for him I decided on option three which was walk away from him and find Bucky. It took a moment for him to process that he'd just slapped me across the face but when it did he started rambling and trying to apologize. "Oh god Mia, I didn't mean to I am so sorry. I should not have done that. Let me get you an ice pack for it at least and you have the full ability to hit me back."
