The next morning when Lily had made her way down to the common room, late for class, she found Scorpius waiting for her. Lily still hadn't forgiven him for how rude he was the night before.
When he saw her his eyes lit up, 'thank God, I thought I had missed you and I was waiting here, missing class, for no one.'
Lily rolled her eyes and walked out of the Ravenclaw common room. Scorpius followed.
'Lily wait, I need to apologise to you.'
Lily ignored him until his arm came down against a wall, blocking her from going forward. Lily groaned and turned herself to face him straight on. She had the sudden urge to hex him.
'Lily I'm sorry for what I said earlier and-'
'What did you say earlier?' Lily tried to act oblivious.
Scorpius' eyes hardened, Lily knew he hated apologising to people, he said it was a trait he had inherited from his father, Lily thought, in the moment she had turned around to face him, that it was just an excuse for the way he treats people. 'For behaving like I was disgusted when you told your brother we were dating...' He whispered through clenched teeth.
Lily widened her eyes mockingly, 'oh my, are my ears hearing this correctly? Or am I going insane?' Lily looked around the corridor and to an invisible audience she said, 'Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy is apologising to me! Can you believe that?'
Scorpius' jaw worked as he clenched and unclenched his teeth, 'I didn't mean any of it and you know it.'
'Oh do I?' Lily's head snapped around to look at him directly in the eye. 'Is that what you assumed did you?' Lily's voiced raised the slightest, 'well the feeling is mutual in the other category.'
'What category?'
'The category in which I wouldn't be seen dead dating you!' Lily's voice bounced off of the rock walls around them, the echo taking a while to die down as Lily and Scorpius stared at each other. Both shocked at what had escaped her lips. They both stood there in silence for a while. She could see Scorpius' jaw work as he tried to fathom something to say.
Lily was speechless, she didn't know what to say, her mouth felt glued shut. After watching Scorpius open and close his mouth a few times she tried to apologise, he had other ideas though. He pivoted on his heel and walked off leaving Lily alone with her consuming thoughts.
What had she done?

The next week was spent with Lily doing everything humanly possible to apologise to Scorpius. He wouldn't let himself be seen within a ten metre radius of her. She had made banners flash every time Scorpius would walk past them with the constant 'I am sorry' written over them. She had sent numerous owls to him with large packages filled with his favourite candies, but eventually she would come across them in bins around the school. She had even embarrassed herself in front of the school by making a speech one time at dinner, which mostly consisted of mumbling and the occasional bread roll being thrown at her. Only when she had gotten half way through her speech did she realise that he had left the Great Hall in anger. That was the last time she had tried to apologise. After that she had stopped trying, the anger she had felt for herself drying up the rest of the need to apologise to Scorpius. When he was ready he would come talk to her, was the lie she told herself quite often.
Without Scorpius sitting next to her making cheeky comments as they had done everything to look for the Tree of Magic, the next few months seemed to drag. Lily had spent so much time around just him that the absence of his warm body sitting next to her and the every now and then bump of their elbows colliding, as he was left handed and she was right, seemed to punch a hole in her stomach. Lily couldn't believe how much she had relied on him until he was gone.
