The eerie sound made its way to Lily's and Scorpius' ears as they rounded the corner of the rocky corridor. They stopped in their tracks as they looked around the humongous cavern. They must've been miles under the school, how deep had they gone? Moss mixed with mould grew on the walls of the cavern, giving the room around them a slightly green tinge. A large bird seemed to be making that eerie call as it flew around the cave, finally, stopping as it landed on a protruding rock on the wall, staring down at them with its beady eyes. The two looked back down now noticing the small details. From a distance they looked like fireflies, but as one of the floating lights passed Lily in a serene kind of dance, she noticed it to be a single dandelion puff. She'd never seen anything so mystical looking, a soft glow seemed to be emitting from the inside of it, out. Lily looked at the rest of the cave, thousands upon thousands of those same shimmering dandelion puffs were floating around the large cave, some landing on the bright emerald green grass and others into the small trench of water surrounding a tiny island in the middle of the cave. Lily and Scorpius stared. On top of the island was what looked like to be a doubled over twig.

'Not in the best shape, am I?' The voice in Lily's head whispered with a hint of a smile.

'Come on.' Lily whispered more to herself than Scorpius. She reached down and gently tugged on his hand to make him move as his attention was still on the dying Tree.

'I'll need to warn you though, Lily... The experience of taking my Seedling will not be a pleasant one...' The Tree's voice seemed to be fading as the time ticked by. Lily pulled harder on Scorpius' hand to get him to start running.

Time was running out.

Lily and Scorpius jumped over the small water trench and as they landed on the island the air seemed to become suffocatingly hot and thick. They felt like they were walking through water. Lily reached her hand toward the Tree, letting go of Scorpius' in the process. She felt a slight tingling start in her fingers as she reached. She was so close now. A few more centimetres. Just as her hand wrapped around the thin brittle branch a loud scream of 'no' made her head whip around to look at the entrance. Lily's hazel eyes met eyes coloured with hard cold steel. Mr Malfoy's voice was interrupted by the explosion that had Lily and Scorpius thrown off their feet and their bodies slapped against the cavern walls.

For a wild second Lily thought she had died, a white blinding light encompassed her vision. Gingerly opening her eyes, the light flashed through her clenched fist. Slowly, she slackened her grip to reveal a small green bean in her palm. She could've sworn it smiled up at her. Shaking her head she groaned and reached to feel a gash along the side of her forehead.

The ground gave a huge shake before the cavern seemed to entirely give up on itself. Lily felt like she was dreaming, all around her rocks began to rain down in slow motion. She heard a slight buzzing sound beside her. Slowly turning her head she saw Scorpius standing over her, protecting her from the falling debris with his wand. He was shouting at her to do something but she couldn't tell what that something was. It was as if she had gotten her ears covered by earmuffs. She looked up to see Mr Malfoy sprinting towards them, he still didn't seem to recognise them in the semi darkness. Lily turned back and looked at the little bean in her hand and quickly slipped it into her pocket.

'Dad!' The sound had sliced its way through her eardrum. The pure desperation of the shriek sent a shiver down Lily's spine. She looked around and saw Scorpius running as fast as his legs could take him towards his father. Lily was confused. Why was Scorpius running towards his father like that? Like...like something she didn't want to think about had happened. She pulled herself up, noticing that her ankle seemed to be turned in a strange angle. She couldn't feel anything though, the fear in her stomach made it hard to think about anything as mediocre as a broken ankle. She limped towards where Mr Malfoy had been running before.

The weeping reached her ears first, 'dad! Dad, please, dad wake up.' Lily's knees buckled at the sight she saw before her. A rock the size of a smart car had knocked Mr Malfoy to the ground. His face was slack and blood trailed its way down his parted lips. Scorpius' cries seemed to tear apart something inside of Lily, the only thing she could think of was to get them out of there.
