There it was, shining like a big beautiful monster, Hogwarts. The lake that the first years were crossing was roughly turning and jolting as the heavy rain splattered over it. Lily had to squint in order to see the dark school.

The first years were led through a passage into the school. An old strict looking lady was standing, waiting for them with her hands behind her back.

'I am Professor Mcgonagall, the headmaster of the school, welcome to Hogwarts. First the rules, there will be no walking about in the castle at night unsupervised, all students get punished for rule breaking, points are gained for doing good deeds and excelling in your studies while points are lost for rule breaking. No spells are to be cast outside of the classroom and if you do Mr Filch, the caretaker, will hear about it and you will do detentions with him. Do I make myself clear? First years you will all wait silently until I come back. Some of you might want to prepare yourselves for the entire school. The Sorting of your houses, either Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, will commence once I come back for you' Professor Mcgonagall eyed some of the boys as the girls all giggled. Lily made sure to flatten her red hair and tuck in her uniform, after all she had inherited her fathers messy hair.

After a few nervous moments of waiting, Professor Mcgonagall came back.

'They are ready for you.' She lead them through the huge open doors. Some of the first years gasped as they entered the grand hall, but most of them gulped and lowered their eyes in embarrassment. Lily was one of the few that actually lifted her head and looked around at the four vertically positioned tables full of students. At the end of the hall stood a table horizontally turned to the students, which was filled with the school's smiling professors. In front of the table though, stood a three legged wooden chair, and on top of the was a black incredibly old pointed hat. The Sorting Hat. Lily had heard a lot about this hat and her father had told her the story of his adventure in second year when he had faced a giant snake called a 'Basilisk' and The Sorting Hat had helped him pull out the Gryffindor sword. Lily was immensely proud of her father. She looked up to see the ceiling but instead was looking right at the blackened starry night sky, but Lily knew better, she had read all about the enchanted ceiling in Howarts: A History

All the first years lined up in front of the whole school and waited as Professor Mcgonagall held out a large scroll.

'When I call out your name you will walk to the seat and sit on it, I will place The Sorting Hat on your head and that will determine which house you will be placed in.' Professor Mcgonagall looked at the scroll and began to read out the names. 'Argini, Annabeth.' A shy girl with short golden hair stepped out of line. Annabeth walked to the stool and sat on it. Professor Mcgonagall placed the hat on the girls head; the hat fell over Annabeth's eyes as its seams broke into a twisted mouth.

'Hufflepuff!' The Sorting Hat shouted as the far right of the room exploded into cheers and applause. Annabeth took a deep breath and trotted over to the Hufflepuff table.

'Edwards, Jack.' A chubby boy took a deep breath from next to Lily and walked over to the stool. He sat down and the Sorting Hat was placed on his head.

'Ravenclaw!' The hat shouted as again, a crowd applauded but this time it was the table second from the left hand side of the Great Hall. Name after name people came out and sat on the stool. Next came Daniel Endergrass, a small boy who tripped over on his way to the stool was placed into Hufflepuff.

'Farrel, Aaron.'

'Gyffindor!

'Frey, Sebastian.'

'Ravenclaw!' Lily's nerves were going absolutely mental as more of the first years were called out.

'Fleck, Seth.'

'Slytherin!

'Finley, Prudence.'

'Hufflepuff!

'Gabriel, Abby. Grant, Lindsey. Guerra, Collin.'

'Grffindor!' Winter Grey and Silas Goldberge were both placed into Slytherin while Beau Grigsby and Elliot Gates joined Hufflepuff. Ivy... Inn... Johnson... Joyce... Jefferson... Kern...

Lily began to sweat as her heart's rhythm hammered in her chest. Lee... Mason... Madsen... Miles... Orta...

Lily wanted to run away as adrenaline pumped through her system. Paige... Paul... Pepper... Pike...

'Potter, Lily.' Professor Mcgonagall shouted over the hungry restless Hogwarts students. Lily stepped forward as an eerie silence passed over the other students. She quickly made her way over to the stool and Professor Mcgonagall gave Lily a warm smile. A smile that was so rare it made a small murmur pass over the crowd in front of the two. The Sorting Hat fell over Lily's eyes.

'Ah... Another Potter I see...' A small voice whispered into her ear. 'I placed both your brothers into Gryffindor and before them both your parents were in Gryffindor too... But where to put you? A lot of courage I can see, a thirst to prove yourself, just like your father I might add... But also... A lot of intelligence... Hmm...' By now Lily was shaking, she held her tongue though.

'My, my... what a hard decision to make... I'd have to say... Ravenclaw!' The hat shouted the last word for everyone to hear. The table between Gryffindor and Slytherin went completely mad. Lily jumped off the stool and sat between Henry Miles and Sebastian Frey. Plenty of Ravenclaws went over to Lily and shook her hand. Even her brothers, Albus and James, strolled over from the Gryffindor table to congratulate her. Lily's face burned as her stomach churned. She was hungry and the remaining first years were also being congratulated into their own houses. Now it was time for the feast, but before it could begin Professor Mcgonagall had a few words to say.

'Settle down, settle down-' she said sternly, '-welcome to Hogwarts first years, and to those of you who have come back... Welcome home. As most of you are aware, no student is to access the Forbidden Forest. Also, this is to the third years and above, Hogsmeade trips have been pushed back two weeks in order for your not-so-surprise tests.-' More than half of the school groaned, '- Now enjoy the feast.' Lily was thinking just how on earth was the school supposed to enjoy the feast without any food on the tables, but then it appeared out of thin air all along the tables. Big thick steaks with fried chips on the side, pork chops lathered in a delicious looking sauce, mash potato with a side of gravy, soups of every flavour, pies:meat, vegetable, mix, sausages piled high on large dinner plates, healthy looking salads in small petite bowls, everything a child could dream for and more was stationed at every table. Lily helped herself to some chicken drumsticks, fried chips and mash potato. All around people spoke and ate and completely enjoyed themselves to the wonderful delights of Hogwarts.
