How did he know?

Lily knew exactly who the Red Butterfly was because she had spent years sitting across from her at the dinner table. She knew the way her red hair shone in the bright sunshine when she played Quiddich with her brother and cousins. The way her chocolate brown eyes lit up with excitement at the very mention of a new book that had been published recently. The way her extensive knowledge on muggle and wizardry topics made her one of the most intelligent witches in her year.

Lily pinched her leg to make sure she wasn't dreaming when she saw Rose Weasley exit out of the classroom she and Scorpius were arguing in moments before.

There was no way that Rose could be the Red Butterfly! She just couldn't be...

Lily watched Rose walking away slowly, her feet sluggish and her eyes bloodshot. What had she just witnessed? Her heart thudded strangely.

The next day Lily couldn't help but recall the strange events so clearly. She wanted to tear her head open and toss out the memory.

'Hey Lily, are you still not speaking to me?' Scorpius' voice travelled into one ear and out the other, Lily couldn't help but stay in her memory. 'Lily?' She blinked out the thoughts and looked up to his silver melting eyes, there was a hardness to them now.

'What?' Lily asked, she couldn't remember what he had just said.

'Are we still friends?' He asked.

Lily sat still watching him. Was he afraid to lose anyone else? 'Of course we are.' He smiled brightly, the hardness to his eyes dissipating slightly. Something clicked inside Lily.

'Who's the Red Butterfly, Scorpius?' Lily asked determinedly. She knew it was Rose, but she couldn't help from wanting to know if Scorpius would tell her the truth.

'Oh this again?' He looked exasperated. 'It doesn't matter anymore, we're done.'

Lily pretended to look shocked. 'What happened? And if it doesn't matter, why don't you tell me?'

'She cared too much about her reputation, didn't want to stick with the 'son of the the school traitor'.' Scorpius bitterly replied. He avoided answering the last question.

'Who is she?' Lily asked, her voice shaking a bit. 'Do I... Do I know her?' Scorpius' eyes snapped up to Lily's, their melting depths seemed to suddenly freeze. He looked like he was trying to convey a message though them. They said 'don't hate me'.

'Yes...' His voice also shook. Lily watched the gears work inside his head, she knew he was making up his mind whether or not to tell her. Something surged inside Lily that made her hand slightly shake. Scorpius' eyes glazed over before whispering, 'It's your cousin, Rose.'

The loud crack of hand meeting cheek resounded in the air around them. Lily's hand stung and she noticed Scorpius' cheek redden almost instantly, every face in the Great Hall turned to look. She didn't know why she had slapped him. She wasn't angry about it before, but now she was. Her heart was racing.

'Lily!' Albus came running from the Gryffindor table, the whole time Scorpius stared at Lily dumbfounded.

'I guess we're not friends anymore are we...?' Scorpius looked down, hiding the pain in his eyes.

Lily gulped. 'Yes we are... You just deserved that.' Scorpius looked up at Lily again. Slowly the other students went back to eating their food and chatting.

Albus stood beside them, shocked. Slowly he said, 'You told her about Rose didn't you...?'

Both Scorpius and Lily wheeled around to stare openly shocked at Albus. How did he know?
