The Loud Quiet

The next day Lily didn't speak to Scorpius at all. He pretended like nothing happened the night before and tried to speak to Lily numerous times, but she would eye him scornfully until he left her alone. It had hurt her a lot knowing that Scorpius didn't trust her with something as trivial as an admirer. She was one of his closest friends and yet he wouldn't let her in to one of his secrets.

The whole day Albus kept asking her why she wasn't speaking to Scorpius and she would shout 'go ask him!' and point at Scorpius who'd be watching the conversation intently. Lily made sure to keep her invisibility cloak in her bag just in case she might need it. She looked over to where Scorpius sat at lunch time with Albus, watching and waiting for the note with the red butterfly on its corner to make its way to his hand.

At dinner that evening Lily noticed Scorpius wasn't anywhere to be seen.

'Hey Kara, I'll be back in a second, I just need to use the restroom.' Lily quickly made up. She raced out of the hall and into the entrance hall. Looking around the deserted corridor to make sure no one was there, she wrapped the invisibility cloak around her, making sure she was well hidden. She had no idea where to go, so she decided to go up the staircase and follow the path Scorpius had used last time.

When Lily had reached the fourth floor she stopped abruptly when she heard a loud bang issuing from one of the classrooms. Slowly opening the door, taking care not to make a sound, she peered inside and noticed a figure soaring above the chairs and tables, hurtling vases in every direction and cackling loudly. It was Peeves the school Poltergeist. Peeves was known to make a chaos of everything in his path. Roaring with laughter at anything slightly morbid or life threatening.

Lily quickly and silently shut the door. She knew Peeves would make a right mess out of her plan if he noticed her. Even if she was hidden under the invisibility cloak, Lily wouldn't risk it. She tip-toed up to the sixth floor before another sound made her stop walking.

'I'm not sure if I can do this anymore...' Lily instantly recognised the voice and tip-toed closer to the hushed sounds issuing from a dark classroom.

'Scorpius, why?' Lily heard a female voice whisper. If she just got close enough, maybe even opened the door of the classroom they were in, Lily could see who it was. The girl sounded like she was on the edge of tears. 'What about us?'

'What about us? What of us? You want to keep me secret!' Scorpius' voice rose before he quickly stopped talking, calming himself. 'Look... I'm not going to sit here and watch you be all happy and fine in front of everyone else, pretending like I don't exist in front of your friends, and then be with you when we're all alone!'

'Scorpius we've been together for a year! What does that mean to you?' The girl sobbed quite loudly.

'Everything! It meant everything to me! But I'm not going to hide from anyone anymore! I'm sick of having you hide me from everyone-'

'My dad would kill me if he knew we were together!' The girl interrupted him. Lily inched closed to the door, listening intently. There was a loud silence that seemed to swallow the air around Lily.

'Well I guess your dad can rest peacefully now, since we aren't together anymore.' Scorpius spat venomously. Lily heard footsteps coming towards her and she quickly moved out of the way before Scorpius could tread on her. The door swung open to reveal Scorpius looking murderous, he slammed the door shut behind him. Lily was standing a few meters away hidden under the invisibility cloak. He stood there for a minute breathing hard, trying to control himself.

It didn't work. He seemed to get angrier. He growled and without warning extended his arm and punched the rock wall beside him. A deafening crack resounded in the quiet air. Lily gasped out loud and clamped her hand over her mouth as Scorpius wheeled around, looking around him and ignoring the slow trickle of blood from his knuckle.

'Who's there?' His eyes swung up and down the corridor, searching. Lily didn't dare try to move. She looked down at his bloody, bruising hand and fought the urge to help him. After a few moments of frantic searching, Scorpius turned around and walked towards the Grand Staircase. Lily was still standing in her position against the wall, her hand covering her mouth, when the door to the classroom where Scorpius had exited silently opened.

Lily had to physically stop herself from gasping again when the girl came out of the classroom, her cheeks tear-stained and her chocolate brown eyes puffy.

Lily knew exactly who the Red Butterfly was.
