Murmurs

Lily stopped walking, she and Scorpius were standing in front of her classroom. There were hardly any students left in the corridor as they hurried to their lessons. She was looking up at Scorpius, his melting silver eyes seemed to freeze, shocked at what he had admitted. It would be nice to know what it feels like to be loved by your own blood. He stood rigid, unable to move.

'Scropius I-' Lily began but was interrupted by the classroom door slamming open.

'Lily - Oh am I interrupting something? Sorry, but Lily you have to come inside, the lesson is about to start.' Jack Edwards said from behind her. She looked up to his chubby face, softly spotted with freckles.

'I'll be there in a second,' Lily turned to look back at Scorpius but he was walking away. 'Wait!' she called out to him but he was already gone. She huffed and walked into the boring class of History of Magic. Professor Biggs made his grand entrance as he always had, appearing out of the blackboard. The first time he did it it was exciting enough, but as the times changed it became boring and mediocre. Every ghost did that and it wasn't anything special anymore. Lily sat down next to Kara Zavala, a muggle born, as she usually did, and then the boring lecture began putting almost everyone into a sleepy trance.

When the bell rang to dismiss the students from their dozing off Lily went towards the Great Hall to look for Scorpius. She couldn't stop thinking about what he had said earlier. He had actually opened up to her for a split second and she hadn't replied to him the way she should have. Even though she had no idea what the correct way to reply to something like that is.

How was he not loved by his parents? Sure his father was a real foul git, but what about his mother? Lily felt like she was going to pop with the amount of questions bubbling in her head. And then she spotted Albus.

'Where's Scorpius?' Lily asked him when she got close enough. They were standing in the middle of the Entrance Hall, students bumping into them from every side.

'No idea, he just left when the bell went off.' Albus replied.

'Was he acting strange in class?' They were in the courtyard now. Lily didn't even realise they had been walking.

'No, why?'

'No reason, anyway I'll see you later, I need to go eat something.' Lily trotted back into the castle knowing Albus was just as confused as she was.

The day seemed to drag out as Lily's mood dropped, in her flying lessons she got hit by Bludgers so many times that the dark violet bruises blossomed into existence by lunchtime. She looked all over the school for Scorpius, wanting nothing more than to hurtle a goblin at him. Was he avoiding her? Did she do something wrong? The same questions bounced inside her head until she couldn't tell left from right anymore. When she got to her Charms lesson things didn't look any brighter. Professor Flitwick, a small part-goblin man, wanted them to practise the Levitation Charm. Lily had been able to make the feather in front of her levitate last lesson, but this lesson proved different. She growled in anger and yelled at anyone who dared to interrupt her Wingardium Leviosa chanting.

She didn't stick around to have dinner and instead went to the Ravenclaw common room to finish her homework. All her papers were scattered on the royal blue carpet floor in front of the warming fire. Her red hair was messily tied back and her fingers were stained with ink when the common room door opened. Lily waited for the click of the door closing but it never came, she looked up and saw Scorpius standing there, stock-still.

They both stared at one another before Scorpius started to back away and turn to walk out of the common room.

'Hey!' Lily bellowed after him making him stop moving. She stood up. 'What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you avoiding me?'

'Look, don't go trying to pity me okay? It's not your problem.' he replied softly and began to move away from the door again but Lily grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back into the room.

'I don't pity you! And don't you dare say it's not my problem, I am your friend, that entitles that your problems become my own and vise versa.' Lily spun him around to face her. 'Yes life is rough, yes I don't know what you've been through, but that's what friends are for. We protect one another, we share the burden and we sure as hell don't avoid each other when things get rough. You don't have to tell me everything now, I just want you to know that I've got your back.' Lily was panting. Scorpius was looking at her with astonishment. They both seemed to hold their breath for a moment before Scorpius pulled her towards him and hugged her.

Lily exhaled sharply, she stood still at first but then wrapped her arms around Scorpius' shoulders after a moment.

'Thank you.' She heard him murmur.
