Chapter 27

A few moons had passed since Y/W/N had given birth to her single kit, K/K/N. Whitewing had also given birth to two she-cats, Dovekit and Ivykit, and Millie's kits had reached six moons, becoming apprentices.

Poppyfrost had also moved into the nursery by this time, expecting Berrynoses kits herself. Y/W/N enjoyed having her friend there with her as well, even if Berrynose had the same kind of worry that Birchfall did over Whitewing.

K/K/N was currently wrestling with Dovekit and Ivykit just outside of the nursery as the queens sat in the sun, and Y/W/N made sure to keep an eye on her.

Jayfeather padded over to where the queens were laying, stepping over Ivykit as she scrambled in front of the medicine cat, bumping his paws.

"Watch it!" He called out, to which Ivykit gave a quick "Sorry!" Before rejoining her littermate and K/K/N.

Y/W/N giggled as she watched Jayfeather sit down beside her. "They're having fun, don't be grumpy with them" She said, glancing up at the blind tom.

"I know, but I can't predict everywhere they're gonna be" He said, but leaned down and touched Y/W/N's nose. "K/K/N having fun too?"

"Yeah, although she's super anxious to be an apprentice, and Dovekit and Ivykit don't help that. All three wanna start hunting and battling already" Y/W/N mused, watching the three kits pounce on each other.

Jayfeather purred "Well, I remember wanting the same thing when I was a kit. That was the main reason for me, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf sneaking off to find those foxes"

Y/W/N remembered the story she heard about her mates encounter as a kit "Didn't you enter the hollow the hard way when that happened?"

Jayfeather snorted. "Yeah. Turns out the ledge doesn't make a great entrance to camp"

"I wonder why" Y/W/N playfully mused. She watched as K/K/N broke away from Dovekit and Ivykit, and seemed like she was about to leap back in when she noticed her father sitting beside Y/W/N.

K/K/N's ears perked up and she darted around the queens basking. Whitewing glanced over as well, and as Jayfeather nuzzled Y/W/N's neck, K/K/N leaped onto Jayfeathers tail.

Jayfeather straightened up and turned his head around to find out what was on his tail. "K/K/N! What are you doing?" He asked, though Y/W/N could hear the lightheartedness in the medicine cats tone.

"I'm hunting!" K/K/N squealed, her icy blue eyes looking up into Jayfeathers blind gaze. Ferncloud snorted as she opened her eyes to look at Jayfeather.

"Blind prey IS the easiest prey" She teased, to which Jayfeather snorted at the older queen. He swished his tail to get K/K/N off it, and then moved his paw to push her to the front of him.

"Go back to Dovekit and Ivykit, it's better to test your hunting skills on something that could actually mimic prey" He said, though Jayfeather gave his daughter a lick on the head before she scampered off to rejoin the littermates.

"Welcome to being a parent Jayfeather" Ferncloud mused "Kits just wanna be warriors as soon as they hear how it works"

Y/W/N purred and leaned against Jayfeather "Especially our daughter. I learned how to hunt waaayy earlier than practically any clan cat, and you've always had the longing of wanting to be a warrior"

Jayfeather sighed "Yeah, you're right. Well, I'm heading back to the medicine cat den" He got up, licking Y/W/N's muzzle. "I love you" He purred before padding off.

"I'm tempted to just stick you to Jayfeather so that we wouldn't ever have to deal with him being grumpy ever again" Ferncloud snorted once Jayfeather left "I dunno what kind of magic you got with him, but it works very well"

Y/W/N shrugged "I don't know either, but I don't really care. He's the sweetest cat I know"

"Because he's sweet whenever he's with you" Poppyfrost piped up "Otherwise he's his usual grumpy self. I think it probably has to do with the fact that you love each other and have a family now, something he technically shouldn't have as a medicine cat"

Y/W/N nodded in understanding "Yeah. I know he desperately tried to be a warrior despite his blindness, but it's impossible"

"So at least you give him some of that life Y/W/N. And honestly I think it helps everyone if Jayfeathers happier" Poppyfrost said, then Y/W/N watched the pregnant queen close her eyes to nap.

K/K/N, Dovekit, and Ivykit tumbled right into Whitewings paws as they played. The white furred queen purred and decided to direct them towards Y/W/N.

The P/C barely noticed what Whitewing did before K/K/N rolled into her forepaws, then looked up at her mother. "Can I hunt mice yet? I'm getting so good at catching Dovekit and Ivykit!" She pleaded

Y/W/N shook her head. "Not until Firestar makes you an apprentice K/K/N" She said gently, and nuzzled the top of her kits head. "You'll have to make do with Dovekit and Ivykit for now"

K/K/N pouted a bit but got up, shaking her pelt off as she padded back over to the two sisters. "That's not gonna stop anytime soon" Ferncloud mused, having watched the interaction.

K/K/N woke up in the middle of the night, yawning quietly as she looked around the nursery. She could see everyone else asleep, including her mother Y/W/N. Bored and wanting to explore, K/K/N carefully slid away from her mother and quietly exited the nursery.

The camp seemed much different at night, given how everyone was asleep. K/K/N looked around at the empty camp, peering into each den until she looked out at the bramble entryway that marked the exit to the forest.

After taking a moment to think, K/K/N approached the bramble entrance. She padded up to it but stopped when she saw Cloudtail on guard duty.

As the kit tried to think of a way through, Cloudtail got up and hurried over to the dirtplace. Now's my chance! K/K/N thought and darted into the forest.

K/K/N looked around at all the sights and scents of the Thunderclan territory, enjoying the freedom she felt as she wandered the night-lit forest.

Soon she heard scuttling and looked over to see a mouse. Perfect! I can show Firestar and Y/W/N that I can become an apprentice now!

K/K/N started padding towards the mouse, keeping as quiet as she could. But she didn't make it far before the mouse perked up, scented the air, and bolted. Aww mouse-dung!

As K/K/N was about to walk further, something grabbed her scruff and lifted her up, scaring the young kit. "What in Starclans name are you doing?!?" Cloudtail asked

"Uhhh..... hunting?" K/K/N replied nervously, and saw the warrior roll his eyes. "Of course. You know kits aren't supposed to leave camp, right?"

K/K/N nervously nodded and Cloudtail sighed, then carried the kit back towards the hollow. "Firestar is not going to be happy, and neither will Y/W/N or Jayfeather, you know?"

K/K/N looked down in shame as Cloudtail approached the bramble entryway and entered the camp, bringing the kit up to Firestar's den.
