Chapter 5

Y/A/N and Brightheart entered the hollow, Y/A/N proudly carrying her vole. "You can put your catch in the fresh-kill pile" She said, pointing at the pile with her tail. "Then you can go chat with the other apprentices" Y/A/N nodded and went over the the fresh-kill pile, dropping the vole into it and looked around. She saw a few of the apprentices chatting with each other, and Y/A/N was about to head over there until she noticed Jaypaw entering the hollow, mouth full of herbs. So instead she padded over to him, walking beside him as he headed to the medicine cat den. "So, how was your first day as an apprentice?" He asked through the herbs. "It was really fun! Brightheart showed me all the borders and I even caught a vole down by the lake!" She said excitedly. "Good for you Y/A/N. You're really lucky to have Brightheart as your mentor" He said. Y/A/N smiled and her pelt started to heat up as they entered the medicine cat den. Jaypaw went and put the herbs away, then came back over to Y/A/N. "So, is that all? You didn't hurt yourself already, did you?" He asked, scenting around Y/A/N. "No, I'm fine. I just wanted to talk with you" She said. "Well, I'm headed over to the elders den to replace their bedding" Y/A/N shrugged "I'll come with. I've got nothing else to do today" 

Jaypaw grabbed some moss "Hey, I was also going to do the nursery, so if you're gonna come then can you grab some more moss? That way we're not making a second trip for the moss for the nursery" Y/A/N nodded and grabbed some moss herself, and the two apprentices left the den and went over to the elders first. Mousefur and Longtail were chatting away with each other, but stopped when they noticed Jaypaw and Y/A/N entering. "Hey Jaypaw, Y/A/N! What brings you to the elders den?" Mousefur asked "I don't think I have any fleas right now" Y/A/N purred in amusement "Gladly, no, we're not checking for fleas right now Mousefur. We're just renewing your bedding" "Oh good, this bedding is getting hard to sleep on" The elder said. She got up and guided Longtail out of the den, presumably to bask in the sun as the apprentices changed the bedding. Jaypaw showed Y/A/N how a nest should be made. They made the elders nest, and Jaypaw grabbed the old bedding while Y/A/N grabbed the new one for the nursery.

The two left the elders den and Jaypaw signlaed for Y/A/N to go to the nursery. "Go replace the nursery's bedding while I toss out this old bedding" Y/A/N nodded and went over to the nursery, dodging Icekit and Foxkit playing outside. She nodded to Ferncloud and Daisy who was sitting right outside the nursery, talking and watching the two kits play. "Hey Y/A/N! How is it being an apprentice?" Daisy asked. "It's really fun!" Y/A/N answered through the moss. "Bet you won't be saying that when you're checking Mousefur for fleas" Ferncloud said and Y/A/N smiled. "Well, I've already done that. I liked Mousefurs stories about the old forest you guys used to live in" Ferncould chuckled "Sure, it's fun now. But just wait until she bores you to death with all of her stories" Y/A/N giggled and headed into the nursery, changing out all the bedding inside for the queens and kits. As she was changing it out, she heard the kits squeal "Hey Hollypaw, will you show us some battle moves!" Then Y/A/N could hear the apprentice answer "Sorry guys, not today. I'm looking for Y/A/N" The P/C she-cat could hear Ferncloud say something, and soon enough Y/A/N could scent Hollypaw enter the nursery. "Hey Y/A/N! Are you in trouble already?" She asked. "No, I'm just helping Jaypaw out" "Ah ok, well then I bet you won't mind sharing some fresh-kill with me, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw" Y/A/N finished the bedding. "Of course not!" She said with a smile, grabbing the old bedding as Jaypaw entered. "Hey Y/A/N, you finished yet?" He said, nodding in Hollypaws direction to acknowledge that he scented her there. "Yep! I just need to know where to toss out the old bedding" Jaypaw nodded and signaled for Y/A/N to follow him. She followed the blind tom out across the clearing, and Jaypaw showed her where the old bedding went.

Afterwards, Y/A/N and Jaypaw joined Hollypaw and Lionpaw, Y/A/N grabbing a squirrel off of the fresh-kill pile for her and Jaypaw to share. They sat down and began eating, Y/A/N was absentmindedly staring at Jaypaw as they ate. Hollypaw and Lionpaw looked at the P/C she-cat, and Hollypaw even waved her tail in Y/A/N's general direction but she got no confirmation from the former loner that she was paying any attention to it. Hollypaw snickered and padded up to behind Y/A/N, and Jaypaw even moved his blind gaze in their direction, noticing Hollypaw move. Y/A/N looked away in embarrassment from Jaypaw looking, even if Jaypaw couldn't actually see that she was staring at him. She then noticed that Hollypaw was no longer beside Lionpaw. "Hey, where'd Hollypaw go?" She asked Lionpaw. He just shrugged, then Y/A/N heard "I'm still here" from Hollypaw, right in her ear. She squealed and jumped in surprise, right into Jaypaw, which bowled him down to the ground. He grunted "What are you doing? Get off!" He said as Hollypaw and Lionpaw were laughing. Y/A/N scrambled to get off the medicine cat apprentice. "I'm sorry! Hollypaw startled me!" She said, her pelt incredibly hot from embarrassment.

Jaypaw grumbled and got to his feet. "What? She wasn't very sneaky, even I could tell she was behind you. How did she startle you?" Y/A/N struggled to answer so Lionpaw chimed in "Because she was too distracted staring at a certain cat" He snickered. Y/A/N immediately retorted "N-no! I wasn't!" She said, which made Lionpaw snicker again "You sure? Why else would you not have noticed Hollypaw?" Y/A/N started stuttering "W-well I was u-umm..." She said, unable to give another reason as to why she was distracted. What do I say? I don't wanna admit to Jaypaw I was staring at him!  She thought. Jaypaw tilted his head, then said "It's fine Lionpaw. I don't think we should break Y/A/N on her first day as an apprentice" He said. He pushed the remains of the squirrel towards Y/A/N. "Here, you can finish this Y/A/N. I'm going to go see if Leafpool needs any help" He said, then got up and headed towards the medicine cat den. Y/A/N, still embarrassed by what happened, sat down and began eating the rest of the squirrel, but noticed Hollypaw and Lionpaw staring at her. She stopped to say "What? Is there something wrong?" She asked. "Yeah, we think you have a crush on our brother" Hollypaw said, smiling at Y/A/N. The P/C cat heated up again. "W-what? Why do you say that? I mean, he's an amazing cat, but that d-doesn't mean I have a crush o-on him...." She looked at the two, who were giving her disbelieving looks. "You sure? You're sure stuttering a lot and giving him a lot of compliments for a cat you don't have a crush on" Y/A/N shook her head and finished the squirrel. "Fine, I might like him a bit. What's your point?" Lionpaw sighed "Well, it is against the medicine cat code for medicine cats to have mates" 

Y/A/N looked at Lionpaw, now her turn to give a disbelieving look "Really? There's a seperate code for medicine cats and they're not allowed to have mates at all?" Lionpaw shook his head. "Nope. The code says so. You'd have to convince Jaypaw to break the code, and he's been pretty dedicated to proving himself. He originally wanted to be a warrior, but his blindness made it too hard, and apparently Starclan told him that he had to be a medicine cat. He wasn't very happy with that, since he really wanted to be a warrior. Actually, wasn't his warrior mentor Brightheart too?" He asked the question to Hollypaw, who nodded. "Yeah, it was, wasn't it? Weird coincidence...." Hollypaw trailed off, then the two siblings said something to each other that Y/A/N didn't catch. They both got up "Hey, we've gotta go do something, so we'll see you later, ok Y/A/N?" The apprentice nodded "Ok guys, I'll talk to you later" They nodded and padded off, talking as they left. Y/A/N shook her head, dismissing the weird behavior at the end and got up herself, padding over to the apprentices den, taking a look inside the medicine cat den before she went to to the apprentices den, and watched Jaypaw talk to Leafpool.

Why can't medicine cats have mates?
