Emma's internal struggle with the darkness.

All her life, Emma never had a choice.

She didn't choose to be an orphan, to grow up without someone who truly cared or made her feel important. She just was.

She didn't choose to fall in love, only to be betrayed and scared and in jail at seventeen. It just happened.

She didn't choose to give birth to a baby boy in prison. Really, she didn't even choose to give him up. She did what was better for him. She didn't choose the life he would get if she didn't.

Emma didn't choose to be the saviour. It was just something that she couldn't seem to escape.

She didn't choose this life.

The few things she thought she did choose usually turned out to be controlled by some mightier force. Choosing to be a good person? Nope, her parents did that for her. Choosing to stay in Storybrooke? Guess again, that was her destiny and there was no avoiding that, apparently. Choosing to open up her heart again? Well, if the way she felt about Killian was any indication, that too was written in the stars.

So sue her if, once finally given a choice, she decided to do something that being the saviour wouldn't allow.

Emma never got to live her life the way she wanted, the way she wished she could. She was angry about that.... or so the being now inside of her said.

She tried to fight it at first, she really did. But why, after all it offered, should she? All she loved, all she had been... it was all a lie. No one really, truly cared about her. She was the saviour and that's why they wanted her around.

As she descended into the darkness, she slowly saw all of her loved ones lose hope. It was satisfying, it was exhilarating, she felt comfort in knowing these people who she'd turned on never truly cared. She was right. She saved herself.

Killian took the longest, but eventually, he'd leave too.

They always did. They never stayed. Love was fake.

The Dark One consumed her soul and soon, Emma Swan was no more.

But maybe, just maybe, that was the only choice she'd ever truly made.

(A/N: Bolded parts are Emma trying to get through to the Dark One. Non-Bolded parts are the dark spirit trying, and succeeding, to consume her soul)

"I've spent my life in sorrow

But live to see each tomorrow.

Destiny, fate, that's all that mattered

And now that old soul's heart is shattered.

Temptation is strongest when no fight is left

The pain, the sadness, the struggle, the theft.

You don't care if this is what's best

There are thorns in my sides and holes in my chest

I though I chose you, but it was someone above

Nothing is real, not even love.

Holding on is a waste of time

To you, letting go would be a crime.

I do this for me, for once in my life,

I'd like to be free, away from the knife.

The knife of time, the knife of love

The knife of sadness and forces from above

You control me now, but not for long

Deep down in you heart you know this is wrong.

No more fate no more tragedy, just let me sin

Because, after all, the Dark One always wins."

Poem by me.
