Chapter 58

I hear the door closing and footsteps coming up the stairs. I sit up and watch my door open and in come Alfie and Zoe.

"Hey." Alfie and Zoe greet.

"What's up?" I ask, already knowing why they are here.

"Tanya and Jim told us it was okay for us to tell you." Zoe starts. "Tanya and Jim have been married for some time now, yeah?"

I nod.

"Well, they've also been trying for a baby for some time now." Zoe adds.

I stare blankly at them. There's no way she lost her baby.

"Oh no.." I say.

"Don't worry, she didn't lose the baby or anything." Zoe frowns. "Much worse."

"Wh...what happened?"

Zoe sighs. "Tanya can't get pregnant."

*Flashback*

Alfie point of view

"Hey tan! Hey Jim" I call out, opening the door for them.

Tanya has a very sad face like she's been crying. Her eyes are red and puffy. Jim looks like he's going to be sick.

"Everything alright, mate?" I ask.

Zoe hobbles into the living room and sets her krutches down. "Come sit, neighbours."

Tanya walks over and Jim beside her with his hand on her lower back. They sit down.

"You guys don't look to happy.. but did you go to the doctor?" Zoe asks, looking concerned.

"Yeah and..." Tanya's voice broke.

Jim clears his throat. "Um yeah and.. we found out that Tanya is infertile."

Tanya starts crying hard. This news is overwhelming. Zoe starts crying too, and she reaches over to hug Tan.

Jims eyes start watering too and he cries a little while coughing. He's trying to stay strong, but it's okay to cry.

"Let it out Jim." I say, patting his back.

"I'm so sorry to hear, you guys." Zoe coos.

"I know it's just.. I didn't realize how painful it is to not have a kid and I feel so bad for you too because you went through this." Tanya cries.

Zoes eyes start crying more too. "Yeah, it's okay you can always-"

Maya pauses before entering the room. "Oh sorry."

Zoe left the room while Tanya tried to look like she hadn't been crying.

I talk with them until Zoe comes back and sits down. "Uh, like I was saying." Zoe starts. "You can always adopt."

Tanya smiles a bit. "That's what we wanted to do. I've always wanted my own baby, but we both love what you guys did with a 12 year old."

I smile at Zoe. "You guys wanna adopt an older child?"

Jim smiles at Tan and they both nod. I look excitedly at Zoe. "The place we got Maya from might have someone for you."

Zoe grins. "Yes! Maya would be happy to have a neighbor around her age."

Maya's point of view

"oh." Is all I say to the news.

Zoe and Alfie nod sadly. "It's really sad."

"Why can't she have a baby?" I ask.

"Well, some girls bodies are just not right for what they need to have one." Zoe explains.

"I... Is that why you adopted me?"

Zoe looks at Alfie and nods sadly. "Yeah, Maya. It is."

I get up and hug her. "I'm so sorry."
