Joe's car pulls up and I jump in, clutching the bag to my chest.

"Hey." Joe turns to me, with red eyes like he was crying hard.

"Hi." I weakly say. "What happened?

He didn't look at me at all while he drove. "Oh jeez." He says, trying not to cry. "Um. I believe a car hit her from the side while she was parked. But I don't know the whole story. You would be better to ask Alfie."

I nod. Zoe was hit by a car. Why would this happen.

We arrive at the hospital and go inside. Joe talks to the lady at the till and we go into the elevator. It's a silent way up.

Alfie is outside of the room when we arrive. He looks over and runs to me, pulling me into a tight hug. "It's bad, Maya." He says into my shoulder.

I start to cry but say nothing. Us three sit down outside of her room and a doctor comes out after what felt like forever.

"Alfie Deyes." He speaks. Alfie stands.

"Yes?"

"You can come in now."

We walk in and all my hope flushes once I see her condition. She has a leg cast on and it's being help up by something, a neckbrace, a bandaged arm, and lots of gauze and bandages on her body and some on her face.

My hand goes over my mouth and I bury my face into Joe. Joe and Alfie start to cry.

"She should wake up soon." The doctor says sadly.

I look at the IV stabbing into Zoe's arm. Who on earth would do this to my Zoe?

We sit with her and talk for a long time. Alfie and Joe leave the room after a bit to get some food for me and I stay with Zoe.

I hold her hand and start crying again. "Zoe.... I'm so sorry this happened to you. If it makes you feel any better, you still look gorgeous. Since I don't feel comfortable talking about this with Alfie or Joe, I'll tell you. I met a boy today..."

I start talking and telling her all about Sam.

"If you can hear me, squeeze my hand." I say, still holding her hand.

Nothing.

"Zoe please."

Nothing.

I sigh. It's so silent in the room. almost too silent.

"If you can hear me, please squeeze my hand..... Mum."

Nothing.

Tears fall down my face now. I need her to talk back.

Then, her hand squeezed mine. I look up quickly. Her beautiful blue eyes are open and staring at me.

"Hi Maya." She smiles.

"ZOE!" I yell. "Let me tell the doctor!"

She shakes her head no. "No no please, I want to spend some time with you before they have to talk to me again."

I smile. "Okay."

"So, that Sam boy sounds nice." She winks. "Do you like him?"

I blush but I shake my head. "No he's a good friend."

"Mmhmm." She says. We both laugh.

"I'm so happy your awake." I say. "And okay."

She smiles. "Me too."

Joe and Alfie come into the room. I turn and smile at them. They see Zoe and drop the bags of food they had.

"ZOE!" they both yell together.

We all start talking and eventually we call in the doctor.

We have to leave the room and Zoe has to stay over night. "Please don't make me go to school. I would rather stay all day with Zoe." I beg.

Alfie hesitates. Then answers. "Oh, all right."
