Ethan Dashiell's Journal Entry No. 143

This entry contains records of the events that took place after I met the leader of CODE:NYX in the library.

Still finding ways to escape this strange school, I met her. Was it pure coincidence? Probably not. I can't tell you anything right now. But one thing is for sure. I like wherever this is going.

Dinala niya ako sa Zigokubana Building, third floor, and farthest room, katabi ng opisina ng headmaster. I was confused, then I realized that this is her office. It was quite similar to the headmaster's office. Ang pinagkaiba lang nila ay mas malinis ang office niya at walang mga cracks. It looks more like a proper office than the headmaster's.

"Sit," she told me. And of course, sumunod ako.

Umupo siya sa desk niya habang ako naman umupo across niya. I don't know why but she keeps looking at me strangely. Like she's trying to figure me out. Feelings are mutual. I'm also trying to figure her out.

"You play?" I asked when I noticed the chess set on the shelves.

"It lessens the boredom," she answered. "I didn't bring you here to question me. It's the other way around."

Everytime she talks, I feel like I'm gawking in awe of her beauty.  I don't even know someone could look this fine.

"Destruction of property, public disturbance, and violation of academy regulations, what do you have to say for yourself?"

"Guilty. So guilty..."

"Please wipe that stupid look off your face."

I smiled. "I apologize, I can't help it. I barely noticed the star-studded sky behind you since I'm already looking at the most heavenly body in front of me."

"Pervert." Ouch!

"I didn't mean it that way. Can I start over?" I cleared my throat. "I don't think I've ever seen someone as gorgeous as you. What's an honor society, chess master, and rank-5 combatant like me doing without your number?"

"Commiting mortal sins in the library."

Napahilamos na lang ako ng kamay ko sa mukha ko. "I told you I wasn't doing that. There was a man! I was chasing after him and then he just...disappeared!"

"I see," I couldn't tell if pinaniniwalaan niya ako. Parang permanente na ata ang walang emosyong ekspresyon sa mukha niya.

"So what now? You're gonna punish me? Suspend me? Am I getting expelled?"

"No." Ah, darn it!

"Eh ano?"

She squint her eyes at me as if she's trying to read me. "Something is wrong with you." What the hell does that mean?

"No, something is wrong with you," I doubled down. "And this academy. Who the hell kidnaps their own students?!"

"Why do you want to leave?"

"Why do you want us to stay?"

Both of us couldn't answer each other's question. "What are you?" She finally asked.

"A student of Vrent University and I would love to go back to being that."

"No. What are you?" Oh she's asking what am I.

"Human," I answered without a second thought.

Her gaze went to my face then above my head and back to my face. "But you're not," she said. Guys, I'm done. What exactly is she trying to say here?

"I'm human. I even have the birth certificate to prove that. But I'm guessing you've already seen it since you know everything." I qoute her as I harshly put my hand on the desk, squashing a metal ant. That's right, I know they watch us.

I don't trust her. I don't trust anyone in this school but especially her. She looks like the type to stick to rules and would betray me to follow said rules. It's kinda hot.

"Smiling like a pervert won't get you out of this situation," she said as if that's supposed to scare me. A black cat jump onto the desk and hissed at me before curling beside her.

"I don't have to. I'm right where I wanna be," I smirked. "What about you? You didn't tell me what you are? It's unfair."

"I don't have to. All of you bow to me." Wow, god complex.

"Let's play chess, your highness."

"I don't want to." I'm gonna ignore that.

"It's a different type of chess," I said. "We'll use the same rules. But the pieces and the board will be different."

"How so?"

"This academy will be our board."

"And how will you win?"

I laughed at her arrogance. "The first person to figure what the other person is wins," I exclaimed. "But it's unfair, isn't it?"

"Yeah, why am I wasting my time?" She crossed her arms against her chess and lean back on her chair.

"It's unfair to me," I emphasized. "You have a lot to gain when you win. And I don't."

"What makes you think that I have a lot to gain?"

"Just a guess. But I'm right, aren't I?" She didn't answer me. Ha! I knew it. "In order for the game to be fair. You have to give me something to gain."

"And why would I do that?"

"I read it in the rulebook. You have the power to get us out of this academy."

"So," she said. "If I win, I get to figure you out. And if you win, you leave the academy."

"Yes," I affirmed.

For some reason, I felt like I made a mistake. She went silent tapping her fingers on the table, just staring at me with her gold eyes. They were glinting in each blink with that dangerous gold shimmer.

"I accept your offer," she said. Shit! Did I fuck up? What? No! I didn't. She's not going to get anything because I'm human. But I'm getting my freedom. "Is it a deal?" She asked as she stand up from her seat and offered her hand to me.

I stand up as well. "Yes, absolutely." The moment I grabbed her hand, I fell back on my seat.

I grabbed my chest as I pant heavily. For a split second, I was in the middle of this dark place. There was a giant infront of me with glowing eyes that looks like clocks.

"You're clever, Ethan Dashiell." I look up at her standing in front of me. Her eyes flickering gold in the dark. "But not clever enough...exactly how I like it."

And through the window, I caught a glimpse at the sky. It was there. Looking at me—a pair of gigantic eyes peeking though the clouds. Its pupils were oddly...in the shape of butterflies.

I thought I might be hallucinating it...until it squinted at me.
