Chapter 60

Y/n POV

Aleem was near me as we tried to share warmth in this sudden new environment. Yasmina goes up to Mae asking, "I thought you said this was the way to the plane." She answers without worry, "It is, after we get through this snow biome. It's cold, but still uninhabited, except for us." She sighs in relief while looking at her tablet, "We'll be safe."

Darius walks up and quips, "And here I thought Nublar was the trippiest place I'd ever see." Sammy looks up happily as she sees the snow and Ben mutters "I'm definitely not dressed for this." He's right as he's in a slightly ripped tank top which isn't ideal. Kenji adds, "None of us are. And it's definitely not helping my cold." Brooklyn looks at him slightly disgusted and walks away as he corrects himself, "I mean, our cold. We're all cold! Because this!"

Sammy interrupts him as she exclaims happily, "Who cares?! I've never seen snow before! It is so pretty." Sammy sticks her tongue out to catch a snowflake and Yasmina approaches while saying, "You do realize that it's Mantah Corp's snow." She stops disgusted at the realization and Darius adds, "Yeah. Pretty or not, none of us will last very long out here."

Mae objects politely, "Yes, we will. We've got these." She gestures towards some sort of snow mobile vehicle. Well, at least we won't have to tread out in the snow and catch hypothermia.

~Time Skip~

The group split up into the two snow mobiles. In one is Mae driving with Ben, Darius, Yasmina and me. In the other one is Aleem driving with Brooklyn, Kenji and Sammy. Ben and Darius were looking out from the window while I just sat curled up in a ball. The movement was rather calming and almost lulling me to sleep. But suddenly Yasmina gasps and Mae checks up on her, "Yaz, what is it, love?"

I listen as she stutters, "I..I just felt a little car sick. Weird, huh?" Ben quips, "Not really that weird." Darius points forward and exclaims, "That's weird!" I look forward and there is a silhouette of some kind of dinosaur which Mae recognizes, "Pierce?" The snow mobiles stop as they approach Pierce and I realized that he's a Kentrosaurus. Pierce groans, of course he's uncomfortable out here in the cold.

Mae gets out of the vehicle questioning out loud, "Pierce, what are you doing here?" While Mae checks her tablet outside, Yasmina asks "That is a giant, pointy dinosaur standing in front of us, right?" I answered, "It is a Kentrosaurus." Darius adds more to my claim, "They're herbivores. The spikes are mostly for defense."

Suddenly it collapses with a thud and Mae yells, "No! Pierce!" We all get out of the vehicles imminently and head towards them. Mae explains frantically, "He's gone into hypothermic shock. I have to move him out of here somehow...or he'll die." Pierce groans as Mae tries to touch him and Yasmina asks, "What about the supply plane? It's gonna be here in under an hour."

"Yaz is right. You kids take the gliders and keep going. I'll figure out a way to get Pierce back into the desert biome where he belongs," Mae explains but Darius interjects, "You can't just move a 4,000 pound dinosaur by yourself." Brooklyn tries to suggest, "How about some of us go ahead and stall the plane... and the rest of us can stay back here to help?"

Darius declares, "The only way we'll move a dinosaur that big is with both vehicles. If we're gonna save him, we all have to help." He turns to Mae saying, "We're in." There goes our chance at returning home... but to leave the poor dinosaur out here to succumb to the cold. It's a cruel thought. "Sure. I'm not gonna let Mantah Corp hurt one more creature."

Ben backs her up, "Yeah, if something like this ever happened to Bumpy..." I finished it, "We would have done the same in a heartbeat." Brooklyn agrees, "We may be on another freaky dino island, freezing our butts off in an arctic biome, but we're still Camp Cretaceous." Yasmina hesitates but quietly speaks, "We got you, Doc."

With much work, we managed to get Pierce onto two platforms which are connected to the gliders with hooks. "Hang in there, Pierce" whispers Darius to him as he groans from the cold. Both gliders start their engines and slowly but surely are able to drag Pierce from behind. "How's he doing?" asked Mae and Ben responds, "Pretty sure this isn't his preferred mode of travel," but he's hanging in like a champ. I wouldn't like being on cold metal and being dragged in an icy cold environment but what else can be done?

Yasmina was looking at the tablet which began to beep as she informed us, "The supply plane's here." Suddenly, the glider shakes violently as the lights flicker then die down. There is the subtle noise of crackling electricity as the dashboard of the glider glitches out. "What?" Mae questions but then Yasmina shouts, "A BRAD!" I look into her direction and see it running towards us and barely hear it say, "Cease operation immediately."

Mae hits the dashboard which somehow works as the lights turn back on and it stops glitching. The gliders begin to move forward but the BRAD manages to catch up to the glider. Mae turns lightly right which causes the BRAD to move away so it doesn't get hit. Pierce groans and our glider goes over a snowbank which causes it to swirl and hit the other glider. "The airlock's straight ahead!" Mae shouts.

The gliders drift as it appears that we have gone onto a frozen lake. The BRAD shoots out electricity and it hits the glider. It starts to drift more drastically as the energy flickers. Ben was looking back and we scream in surprise as the BRAD somehow got onto the back of the glider. It starts to shoot electricity at the back window but that doesn't work, so it goes to the passenger window where Yasmina is at. She gasps as it monotonously says, "Unauthorized life forms."

The BRAD begins to charge up its electric attack, Yasmina gasps as she opens the door causing the BRAD to fall into the lake through the cracks. Darius and Ben cheer, "Yes! Oh, we made it!"

~Time Skip~

We manage to get Pierce into the airlock, he groans but Mae reassures us, "He'll be fine once he warms up. Now, get out of here! You've got a plane to catch!" We start to run to the other door of the airlock, as the door slides open Darius speaks, "We'll miss you, Dr. Mae." She smiles as Darius adds, "Be safe out there."

The other give a little farewell to her,

"Good luck!"

"You're the best."

"Goodbye, Mae."

"Thanks for everything."

"Take care!"

We run towards where the plane should be, and I smile as we're finally gonna get home. I may love dinosaurs but I think I've already had enough in my lifetime. But just as we arrive at a hill, the sound of a plane taking off is heard. My smile drops instantly as I see the plane soar into the sky, going further and further away from us. We shout even though it's futile.

"No! Hey, wait!"

"Come back! No!"

"Hey! Hey!"

"No, no, no!"

"No! Down here!"

"Please look below!"

We stop shouting as the plane disappears into the sky. The silence is filled with despair as Kenji shouts, "Dang it!" Yasmina falls onto the grass sobbing as she exclaims, "This sucks!" Darius tries to give words of comfort, "Look, guys, I know this isn't what we wanted but we did the right thing. Right?" I exhale harshly as I struggle not to cry and Aleem hugs me tighter. Ben walks up to Darius, "Darius... Let's go check on Mae." It sounded like he wanted to say something else but decided not to.

Aleem whispers, "Why? Why does this always happen? We're always close to escaping this torture and then... we can't."

I whisper back, "I had a thought that we wouldn't make it... but it still hurts... to be so close to escape."

"I understand."

Darius and Ben begin to walk away and I decide to follow as Aleem releases me from the hug. The both of us decide to follow them leaving Kenji, Brooklyn, Sammy, and Yasmina to talk with themselves.
