Chapter 62

Y/n POV

"Kash."

"Who's Kash?" asks Kenji immediately and Mae answers, "My boss." Mae then thinks of something, "Right, then. You get Pierce to his food. Kash will be in the jungle biome. I'll get cleaned up, then go get some answers." Ben, slightly worried, asks, "You're sure that's safe." As Mae walks away she states, "Kash is a harmless blowhard with a penchant for bad music and even worse tattoos. Plus, until I know what he's up to, it's best he doesn't know you're here."

Darius cautions as he backs up to Pierce, "Be careful, Mae." Once he reaches Pierce he exclaims, "Come on, Pierce! Let's get some chow. Here we go." Mae chuckles as Darius fails to move the dinosaur, "Come on now, boy. Dinner time." Mae walks up to Darius, "He may not listen to you, but you can try. I'll be back soon." She leaves as she gives Darius her tablet.

I turn to Aleem and mutter, "Kash sounds like a fitting name for whoever works for Mantah Corp." Aleem shakes his head with a smile, "It's way too on the nose."

"Mae!"

"Mae!"

I turn my head towards the sudden shouting and see Sammy and Yasmina running towards us. Well, more like Yasmina running after Sammy as she shouts out for Mae. Pierce starts to feel agitated as he groans. "Calm down, Pierce," says Darius as he plays an audio on the tablet. "Yeah, that's it," he says once Pierce seems to calm down from the shouting.

Sammy runs up to Darius asking quickly, "Darius, where's Mae?" Darius answered swiftly, "Oh, she went to see her boss in the jungle biome. Some guy named-" he gets cut off as Sammy frowns, "Kash." She walks past Darius and Brooklyn asks, "How'd you know?" Sammy continues to walk while balling up her fists, "I'm gonna go confront him and get some answers."

"What?" Kenji asks, confused and Darius tries to explain the instructions Mae left them on. "But Mae said-" he gets cut off by Pierce groaning again and Darius trying to calm him down, "Whoa. Whoa. Easy, Pierce. Easy." He tries to play an audio on the tablet as Brooklyn chimes in, "Pierce, it's okay." The audio plays as he adds, "Safe, Pierce. You're safe."

While Yasmina tries and fails to calm down Sammy, I decide to state what Mae told us, "Mae told us that we should stay here, away from the jungle biome. We don't want to-" I get cut off as she shouts. "No! You don't get it! Kash... Kash is the one who blackmailed my family." The revelation surprises us and Brooklyn tries to sympathize, "I can't imagine how you feel right now."

Darius adds, trying to get her to understand, "But we won't get to the truth by confronting a gut like that." Sammy continues yelling, "How do you all not get this?! I thought you were my friends." She starts to cry as she walks away while Darius follows her shouting, "Sammy, no! You can't!"

I turn away not wanting to hear anymore of this argument. Why can't she understand that by confronting the man it will just put us all in possible danger. If he's willing to blackmail people then he'll definitely not feel bad about doing anything to young teens. Additionally, all this shouting is making Pierce act up again! We struggle to calm him down as Darius comes running towards us.

He plays the audio multiple times until Pierce calms down, again. Everything was okay until Ben asked a dreaded question, "Uh, guys? Where's Sammy?" We all look back in the direction she was last seen and she's gone. Well, we are definitely getting caught. People can't just think rationally in these terrible situations.

"We can't let her show Kash that we are on this island," I said with authority.

"We need to go after her and stop her before we get exposed," Aleem sides with me.

~Time Skip~

After much running we managed to get to the jungle biome, additionally Yasmina managed to tackle Sammy before she could out us in front of Kash. "What are you doing?" Sammy whispers loudly annoyed. Yasmina answers her, "Sammy, you're our family and we're gonna protect you." Brooklyn whispers harshly, "Guys." She motions us towards her to see what she's seeing.

As we move closer there are two raptors surrounded by three drones shining a yellow light and Mae with Kash alongside some BRADs. I could barely hear Mae speak, "You heard me. Stop all of this now or I'll go over your head." Kash shoots back, "Is that a threat?" He sighs, "I really wish you didn't make this so adversarial. A couple of geniuses like us?" He uses a device which causes the BRADs to growl towards Mae as he finishes, "We could've made an amazing team."

Mae, surprised by his action to threaten her, "Kash... What are you..." Darius asks quietly, "Is he..." Brooklyn said, "No... he wouldn't." Darius comes up with something, "Okay, listen up." As Darius explained the plan Mae started to run away from Kash as he made the BRADs chase her.

Brooklyn and Kenji were sent to distract one BRAD as Yasmina distracts the other one. Sammy helps Mae and hopefully takes her to the nearest airlock. Ben and I managed to drop a small boulder on the BRAD that was chasing Yasmina, destroying it. We continued to run so we could gather up at the airlock Sammy is supposedly taking Mae too.

Sammy saw us and whispered, "All right, if we can surprise that thing, we can take it out." Mae whispers back, "Noted," and starts running towards the BRAD with a stick. As she was about to hit the robot, a Raptor jumps onto it, crushing it. Mae gasps as the Velociraptor snarls then roars at Mae. She stumbles back and falls backwards. The raptor grabs her by her jacket and when he swings it's head her jacket rips releasing her.

"Mae!" Sammy shouts as she grabs the branch after the raptor drops the jacket. Another raptor came from behind us and we bunch up in a group as the two Velociraptors begin to circle us. Sammy starts to run towards the crushed BRAD. A raptor follows Sammy and she barely manages to reach the BRAD before lifting it's head up causing it to shoot electricity at the raptor.

She shoots at both the raptors and we see a window of opportunity. "Let's go!" I shout, Darius and Aleem help carry Mae as we go behind cover. More BRADs appear behind Sammy but she's able to run and hide with us.

~Time Skip~

We were hiding in a cave as Kenji enters speaking, "Ben's keeping look out."  He sits down continuing, "This'll work. For now." Brooklyn is tending to Mae's injuries from the raptor attack. "I'm sorry," mutters Sammy, "If you all hadn't stopped me, I'd probably be dead right now." She gestures to all of us, "Heck, you all might have been, too. I'm... I'm sorry."

Brooklyn approaches trying to comfort her, "You facing Kash wasn't about being the brave thing to do, it was about whether it was the smart thing to do." "Easy, B," Yasmina says, "If Sammy didn't do what she did, we wouldn't have been there to save Mae." Sammy objects, agreeing with Brooklyn, "It's okay, Yaz. She's right. The only way for us all to get answers we want is to play the long game."

"Then that's what we'll do," Darius spoke as he approaches them and sat down.

Ben's POV

I was scouting the area where the raptors had attacked us. I duck behind the ferns as I see Kash approach the crushed BRAD. My eyes narrow as he picks up Mae's tattered jacket. The sound of ringing is heard, wait it can't be? Kash chuckles as he grabs the phone and answers it. I hear the one-sided conversation about Mae supposedly getting neutralized by the raptors.

"Hello? Yep, yes, that's right. It couldn't be avoided. No, not a setback. An opportunity."

He walks away with Mae's jacket as he continues to talk. Kash has a phone then, that's great news. I need to tell the others about this detail. I smile as I start running toward the cave the others hid in.
