Yae Miko sighed, walking up a grassy hill towards a wooden shrine, far smaller and less extravagant than she was used to. She was noticeably more disheveled than normal, smudges and clumps of dirt appearing on her silken clothing.
In all her life, Yae Miko never thought she would become a runaway, but here she was.
Instead of returning to the Shrine, she fled to Seirai Island, a land long sealed off from the Shogunate. First by the people there, then by the Thunder Manifestation, the great thunder spirit that even Ei would have trouble with. If Ei found where they were hiding, she would have to get through that thing first before she would have a chance to take out Wu. Still, it had almost not been worth it. It had been beyond tedious to re-engage the sealing stones on the island so that they could thwart the Thunder Manifestation's storm.
To think she had to go to such measures. But then again, the Ei that was walking Inazuma these days was one completely foreign to her. A woman who would cleave through a dozen men to kill the one she deemed guilty. A woman who would try to take the head of a grieving boy as he cradled the body of a friend he was forced to kill. A woman who would look her best friend in the eye as she swung for both her and her target.
A black cat sat on a wooden fence post as she trudged past.
"You've mud on your pretty shoes, mainlander..."
The cat said.
"Bah, bite me, Neko..." Miko sighed.
"To think that the great Lady Guuji of the Narukami Shrine, Chamberlain of the brutal Raiden Shogun, would be fleeing from the very god she serves... With her battered boytoy, might I add..." The black cat taunted, walking along the fence as Miko stiffened with defensiveness.
"Quiet, you... I mean it." Yae Miko sighed. "I did you a service by fixing the island's seals, an endeavor you could not accomplish for 500 years..." Miko said.
"Which is the only reason I entertained your stay on this island." Neko said. "But perhaps, it will all be worth it if you can mold that sad, scruffy monkey into something that could kill the Shogun." Neko said.
"I told you, Son Wu will only help me get close enough to talk some sense into her..." Miko said.
"But after all Ei has done, don't you think she deserves what is coming to her?" Neko asked.
"...Son Wu has a right to knock some sense into her. I'll leave it at that." Miko stumbled into the shrine, her ankles sore after walking more in an afternoon than she had in centuries. She hunkered down by a small stove, lighting the wood beneath as the flames licked at a pot of water suspended above it.
Miko produced a handful of eggs, some fowl from a few unlucky pigeons she had caught, and a handful of mushroom and herbs she had gathered. She took apart the ingredients, dropping them into the soup and stirring lightly. What she would give to have one of those pots that perfectly cooked meals would jump out of, but no dice. She carefully ladled the soup into a bowl, blowing twice on it as she gingerly walked into the other room.
"Son...? Are you awake?" Miko asked.
He was, but he didn't respond.
Wu already looked dead, lying on his back on a dusty futon. His eyes were dark and baggy, his hair was disheveled, and his body was motionless, save for the few slow breaths that indicated he wasn't a corpse. Half a dozen cats and kittens surrounded him, mewling at, laying on, and pawing at his still form, the adorable show doing nothing to change the man's mental state.
Miko furrowed her brow, conjuring a fox manifestation to snarl at the kitties. The cats trotted out of the room as she knelt down by his side.
"Son... I've brought you food... Egg and fowl soup..." Miko said.
