Can
That night, time seemed to stand still. The ghosts of Emre, my mother's lies, and the shadow of the forced marriage that had bound us like chains were gone. It was just her and me. As I held her, I realized that this was our true first wedding night: it hadn't just been desire, but a whisper of forgiveness upon our skin, a promise made without the need for words. Sanem had opened up to me like a flower under the rain, and I lost myself in her scent, with the realization of one who finally knows they are home.
I don't know how long I stayed there watching her sleep on our first real night as husband and wife. The darkness of the room was broken only by the distant reflection of the moon on the Golden Horn, but for me, all the light came from her. Having her in my arms, feeling her steady breath against my chest, wasn't just the fulfillment of a physical desire; it was peace after a devastating war. Every barrier had crumbled; the wounded, proud Can and the frightened, fleeing Sanem no longer existed. It was just us, naked in our truths, finally ready to belong to each other without reservation.
As I held her close, I fearfully placed a hand on her prominent belly. I knew our future was growing inside, but feeling it was a different kind of thrill when, suddenly, a firm kick and a small movement sought the warmth of my palm. I froze; my heart skipped a beat.
"Do you feel it?" Sanem whispered. She wasn't fully awake, but she had felt my startle. "It's incredible..." I replied, my voice thick with emotion. "Tonight they want to make their presence felt—or rather, I think they recognize their daddy's hand," she added with a half-smile, her eyes still closed and her voice raspy with sleep.
It was in that moment that I understood something wonderful and unexpected: I was no longer a solitary Albatross. My ocean was now her, and that tiny heartbeat was my anchor. I kissed her forehead, vowing to myself and to her that no one would ever again shatter the serenity of the secure nest we were building.
Waking up in that room had a new flavor. The morning light no longer hit the walls in an aseptic way; instead, it seemed to linger on her skin, caressing the curve of her shoulder as if the sun itself wanted to bid her good morning. I paused to observe the contrast between her dark hair and the whiteness of the pillow, her parted lips, the serenity etched on her face—an image worth more than a thousand shots around the world.
Only a few months earlier, within these same walls, we had imagined a life together, but it had been a dream stained by suspicion and pain. Now, the sunlight illuminating the bed seemed to bless our reality, and the silence of the room was replaced by the calm rhythm of her breathing and the light rustle of the sheets as she moved in her sleep. It is the sound of my peace. I got up slowly and walked out onto the porch. The view was the same as ever, but now my eyes saw possibilities and a future everywhere. This house no longer felt like a prison of glass and concrete, but a blank canvas to paint together and welcome our family.
Hearing a movement behind me, I turned, and seeing Sanem moving through the room, finally at ease, opened my heart. She was no longer a "guest" in my house, but the absolute mistress of my soul.
In the following weeks, we began to reclaim the estate, corner by corner. That house, which for days had been the theater of her solitude and my abandonment, had to change its skin. Sanem brought color with her, chasing away the gray the decorator had chosen instead of us. I watched her for hours while, with knees stained with dirt, she planted tulip bulbs and roses in the garden. I approached her while her hands were buried in the dark earth. There was something ancestral about seeing her create life in our garden as well as in our family. I took her hands, heedless of the dirt, and feeling her skin warm and rough from work made me realize that our happiness is not made of crystal, but of earth, roots, and shared toil. We aren't just planting flowers; we are anchoring our souls to this soil.
