Rupa Aunty had sent a notification to Anshuman's house, that Parvati was here, but she got no response. Parvati even went there, but the house had been sealed, as if the whole family had moved out.
Where were they? Where was Anshuman?
Dissatisfied, she returned to her home.
The night that she went into labour, she had a dream. In the dream, there was a dark figure - not scary looking, but rather there was a warmth to the figure. She couldn't make out their face, but she could hear their voice... it was a comforting sound.
"The child you gave birth to stopped belonging to you the moment you cursed it," the comforting sound told her. "This child is not yours. This child is mine."
Parvati looked up at the figure.
"Who are you?" she asked, but the figure disappeared.
She was woken up on her bed, where there was a midwife next to her. She had given birth to her baby girl a few minutes ago and had gone to sleep.
The baby was fast asleep next to her.
Parvati managed to ignore the dream and fall back asleep. The same figure appeared.
"Tomorrow afternoon, keep the baby in a basket and bring her to the end of the street," the figure told her. "This baby is not yours. She might be born from you, but she is not born of you. She is born of me. Remember, there is a grander plan for this child, that you will not be able to give her... that is why I must take her."
"What?" Parvati's voice echoed in the darkness, and the figure disappeared.
She woke up sweating and held her baby to her. There was no way she would leave her baby. Never. It was a dream. Just a dream. That was it.
Then she went back to sleep.
She woke up the next morning to a knock on the door. Parvati went to open it, and when she saw a little girl carrying a basket of bananas, she nearly gasped.
"Would you like to buy this basket?" the girl asked innocently.
Parvati shook her head and nearly closed the door on the girl's face.
No way.
This couldn't be a sign that her dream was far more real than a dream... could it?
She looked at her baby girl and rushed to her. She was barely a day old.
"I won't ever give you up," she told her daughter. "You're mine... only mine."
She would soon learn that what was meant to be would happen at any cost.
