His fingers interlaced with mine through anxiety making me rest my other hand on top of his and look at him.
Zak was listening to the asthma nurse who was asking him different questions.
"He's had a cough at night, but I've put it down to an upcoming attack." I announced making Zak look at me.
"You never said." He frowned.
"It's only happened a few times, and I've only heard you because I sleep with my head on your chest." I answered.
"Have you got your inhalers and spacer?" The nurse asked.
I went in my bag and pulled them out handing her it. I had sense to pick all of Zak's things up where as he was a little scatterbrained from nerves. He always panicked coming here in case they told him his chest had got worse. Which would mean either a high dose of medication or less work.
Both were terrifying for him.
"Let's take a peak flow and find out where we are on this.." She smiled.
"It won't be good. I had an asthma attack this morning." Zak told her.
"Okay." She answered writing it down. "Anything triggered you?"
"Stress.. I- " he looked at me and frowned.
"He thought I had left him." I answered fore him.
She gave a warm smile and looked at our hands before writing it down. I watched as Zak did the peak flow and looked at it hopeful.
"It's slightly worse than last time..."
She announced. "But if you had an attack this morning then it makes sense." She said almost speaking to herself.I informed her of the dose he had whilst having the asthma attack, she also wrote that down and looked at Zak.
"Next step is for you to show me how you administer your medication." She said looking at him as he picked it up shoving it in his mouth.
"This is a steroid based inhaler... You don't use the spacer?" The nurse asked him.
"No..."
"Do you rinse your mouth after?" She asked.
"Every time. I don't like the last of it on my palette." Zak replied.
"That's good. Well. Not that you don't like it but because it's a steroid inhaler it can irritate the tongue." She answered.
"Still wearing respirators on lockdowns?" She asked.
"Yep. One case of black mold was enough for me." He answered.
This was how his asthma started, after years of running around in the dark at night he developed black mold in his body, resulting in a week in hospital whilst they tried to treat it. In a sense I was glad that I wast with him for that.. Because I would have been a wreck and probably kicked up until he was being looked after by the best of the best and was making improvements. Plus I'd sleep with him at the hospital.
His hand squeezed mine bringing me back to the room.
"Sorry?" I asked looking at them both.
"I asked for a second prescription for my inhalers. For you to keep hold of." Zak informed me making me nod.
"Yes please. At least if he doesn't have it I will. Like this morning."
