"We all would like to appear whole."

Kaden's POV

My feet dragged as I walked out of my room. My heart hung heavy yet I smiled.

My hand ran through the mess atop my head and I groaned softly.

I entered the kitchen and smiled softly at my parents. They were sitting at the table talking softly. Age had made their hair a little grey, slight wrinkles formed by their eyes.

They told me that once they used to be immortal, but that had vanished when my father died a second time and my mother was broken from her wolf. The thought that they will die one day unnerved me.

I pushed the thought out of my mind and got some sausages off of a plate before scarfing them down.

I finished and rubbed my aching temples.

"You okay son?" My father asked and I blinked and looked at him nodding weakly. My mother stared at me and I gulped. I didn't want to talk about it.

"I'm good." I said and retreated to the outside.

I breathed in the warm fresh air and sighed.

"You're good. You're good." I growled softly and stripped my clothes then shifted into my charcoal black wolf with a white tail and paws.

My paws carried me far form the house.

I wanted her. She'd make me better... my mate. Wouldn't she?

But I didn't know where she was! I was almost nineteen for Goddess's sake, I should've found her!

Or maybe I didn't have one.

The thought made me snarl and I slashed at the air with my claws. I needed release.

I ran through the woods looking for something, anything. Then I found it, a doe walking along. I didn't hesitate in jumping on it and ripping it apart.

I stepped away from the mutilated body. Blood and gore dribbled from my snout and I growled in relaxation.

It was getting difficult to control myself.

My father always told me mom was the reason he stayed sane. Now, they didn't know I lashed out the way I did... but I needed a mate too, maybe she'd be what would keep me cool.

Maybe.

I licked the blood from my chops and growled as I gave myself a shake.

I walked along trying to clear my head when I heard the breaking of twigs. My ears perked and I crouched low following the sound.

A dank scent flowed towards me and I held back a snarl.

Rouges.

My lips curled as a scruffy gray wolf came into view and as I watched a brown one followed it. They were both male. As I was about to step forward a light gray female stepped out of the brush and fell in step with the males. They moused around for a while and I'd had enough of just watching.

I leapt from where I stood and padded toward them my tail raised in warning.

The wolves instantly looked over at me and raised their hackles.

"What are you doing on my territory?" I snarled and the males bared their fangs.

"We're just passing through." the female said stepping forward a little nudging the others. The males glanced at her and eyed me cautiously.

I let out a deep growl as they began to move away. They were not going to just leave as if they had not come. I snarled and leapt at them and they instantly shrunk back.

"Look man we don't want any trouble." one male started and I bared my long fangs at him. He gulped and showed his throat in submission but I wasn't letting him go. I lunged and grasped his throat in my jaws growling in satisfaction at his gurgled whine and the tang of blood in my mouth.

The other two howled in shock as I ripped out his jugular and his body sank to the forest floor.

They huddled together and the male stepped protectively in front of the female. Fear was reeking from them and I gave a wolfish grin.

"Please let us go... We'll just leave, I promise." The female pleaded and I growled at her begging.

"Shut up!" I snarled and launched myself at them.

Whines and howls echoed in my ears as I attacked and snapped at necks and flanks. My jaws tore in stomachs and hides. The smell of blood filled the air and I was content with it.

I looked at the bodies and gave my ear a good scratch.

"Dumb mutts." I growled and padded back towards home.

*six months later*

"Kaden what happened?" My mother cried as I walked inside. I looked down at the blood covering me. Oh yeah...

"Nothing mom just some rouges. It's not my blood. Their bodies are by the southern border." I said and stretched softly.

"What have I told you Kaden? One day the rouges are going to get you. You need to call for reinforcements sometimes." She said and I nodded and smiled.

"Okay mom. I got it. Are you and Dad packed?" I asked and she nodded.

"It's gonna be strange not living around the pack but us old wolves are fine with retiring." My mother said with a twinkle in her eyes and I smiled.

"Now you can scream as loud as you want babe." My dad said coming around the corner smirking. Mom gaped and threw up her hands while blushing. I bit the inside of my cheek to stop from laughing.

"Clayton Ravenwolf I swear you're such a-you're a mess." My mom said shaking her head and letting her hands fall to her sides.

"But you love me anyways." Dad said with a triumphant smirk and Mom rolled her eyes but smiled and ended up laughing.

"Yes, I do." My mother said staring fondly at my father and I started toward their old room which was now mine.

"Kaden don't forget to go to the celebration for you becoming alpha tomorrow!" My mom called on the way out and I nodded in return.

I waited for them to leave before locking myself in the room and going to take a nice long shower. Something to calm my nerves.

After all I was Alpha now and an alpha must be levelheaded...

Right?
