"Sometimes the quiet is everything you don't want to hear."
Amelia's POV
I woke up to Kaden's whines and groans. I looked over at him and saw him jerking in his sleep. After some moments I came to the conclusion that he was having a nightmare.
I reached over and laid my hand on his shoulder, going to wake him when I heard him talk in a hushed voice.
"Emma."
I pulled my hand away and ignored Rain's jealous growls as I listened. He said it again.
I couldn't help the feeling in the pit of my stomach. I tried to wake him. I couldn't. I shook him, yelled; nothing. After a while he was moving so much I had to take a seat on the couch.
I sat there watching him. Watching the sheets and covers ruffle as he tossed and turned. Watched as he frowned.
My ears were locked on the sound of his groans and whines. Locked on his desperate cries.
"Emma?" Kaden said softly. I looked at him in drowning sadness. I wish I wasn't so prone to pain, but I was. And maybe I was overreacting, but I was hurting. Hurting at the fact he called some girl's name and I couldn't wake him.
Everything he did, every twitch and sigh seemed to stab at my every nerve and wrench my heart. The air was suddenly cold as I sat there, not warm as it had been.
"Emma?" He breathed.
I gulped and stared at my shaking hands, realizing then the tears as one landed hot on my right hand. I watched as it slipped between my fingers and disappeared against my shorts.
Damn mate bond.
It was killing me and seemingly more than it should. Who was Emma really? Why did he dream of her so? Why does he call her name like a child yearns for it's mother?
I tried to distract myself by looking at my phone.
All these questions rang in my head and of course they were ones I could not answer. I brushed the tears from my cheeks and only made a cleaner surface for more to run down. I let out a shaky sigh which turned into a growl.
Emma... Emma... Suddenly it all clicked into place. Em! He called me that as we kissed... he thought of her as we kissed.
I shouldn't be crying; I should be thinking rationally and waking Kaden to get some actual answers to what exactly was going on. Heat flushed into my face and I blinked the tears away and took calming breaths.
Emma. Emma. Emma.
Finally I could take it no longer and I hopped from my seat and ran from the room. Like a madman I rushed down the halls and through the house. Running from reality and outside into the nice welcoming night air.
I was pacing around the house trying to cool off when suddenly my phone rang.
I pulled it from my shorts pocket and looked at the caller ID in shock. After a few more rings I answered.
"Amelia? You there?" His voice sounded so different to me. So... soothing?
"Yeah I'm here." I said softly.
"Are you okay?" He asked and I felt a bitter smile come to my lips.
"Why are you calling? Its almost three AM." I said trying to change the subject.
"I just got this feeling. I needed to check up on you; now are you okay? And don't lie to me." His voice was concerned and stern.
"I'm fine Noah." I said.
"Your voice is cracking, you're breathing heavy, and I can pretty much hear the tears falling. So don't lie again." Noah said and I sighed shakingly.
"Its probably nothing really, but Kaden-"
"This asshole again?" Noah cut in.
"He's not an-" I sighed, "He's been strange lately... He's dreaming about a girl, a dead girl, his friend and I don't know... how he says her name. It's just... I don't know what to think." I said and I heard Noah growl.
"Leave him." Noah said and I looked at the phone in shock before I shook my head, "I can't Noah. He's my mate and just because he dreams about someone doesn't mean I leave him." I shot back.
"He's been acting different and he's dreaming about someone else. Seems like he has some underlying issues. Amelia I'm just looking out for you... Just be careful okay?" Noah said and he let out a huff.
"Okay." I said softly and he gave a short chuckle. For a long while nothing was said, just the sounds of our breathing was picked up on the phones.
"Amelia?" Noah finally broke the silence and his voice was just above a whisper.
"Yes?" I breathed.
"If you ever need me, just call. I'm always here. Or you could stop by my house or the bar, I'm working daily pretty much, but I get off at eight." He said and I felt my heart wrench.
"Thank you." I said softly.
"And Amelia I... I hope everything works out." Noah said and I gazed back at the house.
"Me too Noah."
After a few more words we ended the call and I made my way back into the house.
