"I loved..."

Kaden's POV

The wind blew softly. I sighed as a sweet scent flooded around me and instantly I was gazing around.

"Emma?" I called out and a giggling answered.

My heart began racing and I stepped forward to the bushes and trees.

"Where are you?" I asked and a rustling followed.

"Really Mr. Alpha, shouldn't you be able to find me yourself?" Came Emma's playful reply and I scoffed but a smile tugged at my lips.

"I'm not Alpha yet ya know." I said back and I heard her snicker from her hiding place.

Wake up. I told myself, but I couldn't.

"By the way you act, people'd think you were." Emma said and I rolled my eyes.

"Shut it Em." I said and she laughed.

I scoffed and walked toward the crooked pine tree, where I knew she hid. She jumped as I came into view. Her green eyes widened and I chuckled softly. She huffed and pushed against my chest.

"Don't scare me like that." She said and I smirked and pulled her against me. Sparks pulsed through me and I sighed.

"I didn't mean to scare you." I said honestly.

I love you.

Emma pulled away from me and shook her head before frolicking around the tree. I followed her and smirked as she tossed a pinecone at me and missed horribly.

"What was that?" I chuckled and she stuck her tongue at me.

"Shut up." Emma growled and began to pout.

I smirked and nudged her softly.

"Don't be such a pup." I said and she gave an offended gasp.

"I am not a pup." She said and I smiled.

"Sure Em." I said walking away, knowing she'd follow.

Kaden come back to the house. Beta Drew just came back with news of rouges at the southern border. He's speaking to your dad. Get Emma and come on. Ryan's voice rang in my head through the mind link. I huffed and a growl rumbled in my throat.

Sure Ryan. I replied.

I know you better than that; Kaden don't do anything foolish. Your dad would kill you. And you know how your mom gets when she's angry. Ryan retorted and I thought of my father's wrath and my mother's fiery flames of rage.

I'm just going to look around. I shot back and cut off the link.

"Hey Emma there's rouges by, I'm going to check it out. I'll be right back." I said and the scent of fear billowed from her. I laid a hand on her shoulder and gave her a reassuring look.

"Don't leave Kaden; let's just go home." She said and I shook my head. Rouges were trespassing, no way was I leaving.

"I'll be right back." I assured her and let myself shift into my wolf.

She gave me a worried look before I trotted off.

It wasn't long before I heard the screams. Emma!

I ran toward the sounds. My paws barely touched the ground. I flew toward her running as fast as I could. I whizzed past trees and ferns and skidded to a halt as I looked around. I was lost. I whirled around trying to pick up a scent since the screaming had stopped. Where was she?!

"Emma!" I barked. I listened for a response.

"Emma!" I repeated and strained to listen.

"Kaden." I rushed toward a faint voice. My heart pounded as I picked up the scent of blood. No.

I leaped over a log and stumbled to a halt as a gruesome sight came to my eyes. I felt whimpers escape from me as I saw a bloody Emma laying on the ground. Blood flowed freely from the many wounds covering her precious body and I rushed to her side.

"No. Emma." I whined and licked her cheek. Her teary green eyes met mine and she choked out a sob.

"It hurts Kaden." She coughed and then trembled before the light faded from her eyes.

"No." I growled and prodded her hand but it fell limp.

My heart cracked.

"Emma." I whimpered.

My mate... Knight whimpered.

I lowered my haunches slowly to the ground as I sat beside her body.

"Son? What happened?" I glanced over at a voice to see my father and Beta Drew as their wolves. My dad looked at Emma's body which had converted back to the pretty red wolf she was. His lip curled up in anger revealing his long sharp fangs.

"Rouges." I managed to growl and Drew padded forward his gray coat shimmering. He made his way closer and a growl rumbled inside me as I stood over my dead mate.

"Don't touch her." I barked and the beta paused and tilted his head.

"She's gone Kaden. I know it hurts, but she's gone." Drew said and I looked from the gray wolf to the black wolf of my father.

Wake up dammit! Knight's growl rang out before fading away.

"I should've listened! I should've taken her home! I'm sorry Emma!" I turned away and howled. My chest felt like a metal trap had been clamped onto my heart.

Emma...
