22 Midgardian years earlier

On Midgard – May 23, 1991

The sound of crying broke through the room.

“It’s a girl,” said the doctor. “And look at that red hair.”

“I’ll call her Deirdre. Deirdre Ophelia Kelly.” The mother and father looked down at their new daughter. Their son and other daughter were in the waiting room.

The parents looked down at their daughter. Her skin was milk white and her hair was bright red and her eyes looked like the ocean, with greens and blues and a hint of orange.

Meanwhile on Asgard:

King Odin and Queen Frigga were sitting in the dining room with Loki and Thor, their two eldest sons. Suddenly a messenger burst through the door.

“My king, my queen, you must see Heimdall immediately!” said the messenger.

“What is this all about?” Queen Frigga asked calmly.

“There has been a birth on Midgard. Heimdall says that it is urgent.”

Frigga and Odin went to speak with Heimdall. What kind of birth on Midgard could possibly be of such grave importance? Loki and Thor followed behind silently.

They arrived at Heimdall’s watch. “What is it Heimdall? A birth on Midgard is hardly worthy of our time,” said Odin.

“My king, my queen, this is no ordinary birth. This girl is unlike any other in the nine realms. There has never been a creature quite like her and I doubt there ever will be again.”

“What do you mean?” Frigga asked with concern.

Heimdall explained the mysterious circumstances surrounding this girl’s birth. They were all shocked at the revelation, except for Loki. This girl intrigued Loki. She may have only been mere hours old but plans began to formulate in his mind. Some way or another he would make the girl his, of this he was sure.

On Midgard – 18 years later – May 23, 2009

Today was Deirdre Kelly’s 18th birthday. It should have been an exciting day for her but to her it was just another day. She had to go to school and she had a lot to do before going off to college in the fall. Deirdre wished to herself that someone would take her away from her mundane life.

But chances are this would not happen. Just as always, as Deirdre walked through the empty halls of her school she felt as though she was being watched. But today it was different. She always felt as though she was being watched from a far. Deirdre joked that the aliens were watching her to see if she was ready to bring back to her home planet. She was a strange girl and she embraced that. But today it felt as though the person watching her was right next to her. It was an eerie feeling.

Deirdre’s long red hair was tied in a tight bun. She was wearing a green tank top, jean shorts, and a thin ¾ sleeve black sweater. Her flip-flops clapped against the floor as she looked around the mostly empty school. Most of the students still had one class left, but not Deirdre. She didn’t pass a soul on her way to her car. No one to wish her a happy birthday, no one to ask her if she got any good presents, and no one to ask her if she was feeling okay. As always, there was no one in Deirdre’s life.
