Chapter 31:
Deirdre spent the next few days in and out of Shield meetings and doctors visits. Natasha, Steve, and two other Shield agents rotated in keeping her safe. Things were uneventful otherwise.
She'd been back on Midgard...Earth for a few weeks. Deirdre felt so out of place. She convinced one of the Shield agents to take her to her brother's apartment. For the sake of knowing if he really didn't remember her. She found him in his favorite bar a few blocks away and he looked at her, but never reacted.
She tried sitting next to him. Her perfect, lucky brother. He said to her, "Hope you're not drinking with that baby."
"I'm not," replied Deirdre.
He didn't say anything else, but paid her tab. She wished she could say to him, "Don't you remember me! I'm your little sister. You tried to convince me I was adopted and we fought constantly."
But what would be the point. Deirdre stopped into her old job at the movie theatre and bought food from the girl she considered her best friend five months ago. The girl didn't react to Deirdre. She didn't recognize her. No one did.
Deirdre was invisible. She sat in her movie crying to herself. The shield agent with her gave her tissues.
The doctors said the baby was healthy.
At the next Shield meeting Maria told the group that relocation had started for 30 residents of Oklahoma. After the meeting Maria called Deirdre to the side.
Deirdre went into a room with Maria.
"Miss Kelly, have you performed any magic since arriving on Earth?"
"You tested me when I got here."
"But has anything changed? We need to find a magic caster. We got a message from Dr. Strange and he told us that the situation is bad. Half of Asgard is dead. Right now he and the Scarlet Witch have joined forces with the Asgardians to fight in their words monsters. We don't know how long they can stay."
"What about Loki?"
"Allegedly he's alive and trying to save as many Asgardians as he can. Thor found out that he sent all the children to another realm for safe keeping but after Asgard falls that realm will fall unless the portals can be sealed."
"I performed some minor magic. But I'm not sure how. When I get scared I do things that are out of my control."
"What kind of minor magic did you perform, Miss Kelly?"
"I teleported."
"When? Where?"
Deirdre was nervous. "Three weeks ago I teleported from Brooklyn to my apartment in Mr. Stark's building. I haven't done anything since then."
Maria said, "We need to get you back into testing now."
Deirdre nodded. Tears forming in her eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
"It's okay."
_______________________________________________After several hours of testing and two doctors appointments Deirdre was unable to perform any more magic. She just couldn't control it.
Maria told her that Tony was going on a scouting mission to search for magic casters. Deirdre agreed with this option.
Steve asked her if she wanted to get dinner. It was his turn to baby sit her it seemed.
Deirdre agreed. He picked her up from Shield and took her to a hole in the wall Shawarma place. As they were eating Steve said, "This place was one of the first restaurants I ate at in the present."
