Chapter 30
Deirdre panicked. She slammed her eyes shut and when she opened them she was back in her room at Stark Tower. Was it all a dream? What was going on?
Moments later her phone started buzzing. It was Steve. She reluctantly answered it.
"What just happened? Where are you?!" Steve asked concerned.
"I...I don't know. I think I teleported. I'm back at Stark Tower."
"Don't leave, I'm heading over there. I'm responsible for you. I'll be there in about 45 minutes."
"I'll try to stay right here."
Steve hung up. Deirdre pulled her legs close to her body. She needed to think. She grabbed a towel and some fresh clothes and headed for a shower. As Deirdre stripped down she reflexively checked her back.
Deirdre gasped. The scars were all gone. Her skin looked fresh and new. What was going on? Somehow she missed her scars. They were part of her and part of what she'd experienced. But now...Why was she so confused?
Her breathing was heavy. What normally caused her magic? She thought back to every time she froze time...ever time she teleported without trying. It was always the same thing. Fear. Panic. Hesitation. Unless Loki was with her. As scared as she was around him she couldn't use her powers.
Deirdre stepped into the scalding water. Was she afraid of Steve? He was nice to her. He'd done nothing but try to help her. Why would Steve even want to kiss her? She was broken and pregnant with someone else's child.
After a few minutes Deirdre stepped out of the shower and dried off. She put on an oversized t-shirt and yoga pants. She looked out the window. The sun was setting. Deirdre had never teleported this far.
_________________________________________________Steve knocked on Deirdre's door. She let him in. She stood awkwardly in her living room. "Are you okay," he asked.
"I'm fine...just confused," said Deirdre. The more she thought about it the more kissing Steve felt wrong.
"What's wrong?" asked Steve. "I thought your teleportation wasn't working?"
"It wasn't...I could only really use it when I was scared...I never had full control over it and I never teleported this far."
"You're not scared of me...are you?" asked Steve drawing closer to her.
"I...Maybe? Nothing in my life makes sense right now. So, maybe I am. I spent the last five months being beaten half to death."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have kissed you." Steve sat on her couch. "I just felt a connection with you."
"It's not your fault. I'm just too fucked in the head right now to handle a relationship."
"You're a lady. Where did you learn language like that?" Deirdre sat on a chair far away from Steve.
"Mr. Rogers...Steve...I am so far from a lady. I'm a woman, but I'm nothing like the women you knew in the 40's. Before I was kidnapped my dreams included becoming successful on my own right."
"And what do your dreams include now?" asked Steve.
"A fresh start. I'm a 23 year old with no identity. So, once I give birth I'll probably go to Hollywood and start over. I can make movies and live my life."
"But won't you be lonely?"
"If I keep myself busy I'm never lonely. I spent my childhood friendless. I'm very good at keeping myself entertained."
