Chapter 7:

Deirdre sat there for a few moments. She was going to get up and walk around, but she couldn't hold her body up. She was in too much pain. The door opened and Asta walked in.

"Good day, my lady. Exciting news, you getting betrothed to the King and all. Shall we go to the en suite to get you ready now?" said Asta.

"Yeah, about that. I can't stand on my own, can you help me walk there?" said Deirdre, slightly embarrassed.

"Yes, my lady," said Asta politely. Asta helped lift Deirdre up and walked her to the bathroom. Asta seated her on the chair she'd sat in yesterday. Deirdre looked in the mirror and realized that Loki had managed to leave her face completely free of any marks. As much as he beat her he made sure to leave her face untouched.

Asta began braiding Deirdre's hair. "So are you excited about your upcoming nuptials?" asked Asta brightly.

"No, I'm terrified," said Deirdre honestly.

"Why? King Loki loves you so much," said Asta as she worked a brush through Deirdre's hair.

"How could a man love me and hurt me so much? He took me from my home. I'm never going to see my family or friends again." Deirdre was trying to push back her tears. She didn't care if Loki found out what she was saying. She had to let out her emotions.

"I've known the King for a long time, probably longer than most people. He's always had trouble expressing his emotions, but everything he does he does out of love. He's loved you from the moment he laid eyes on you," said Asta.

Deirdre turned to look at Asta with an expression of shock. She pulled up the skirt of her dress exposing her heavily bruised thighs.

"How can you call this love? He beat me and he took things from me that I can never get back." Deirdre dropped her skirt back down and began crying into her hands.

Asta finished braiding Deirdre's hair. Deirdre was still crying.

"I have to do your make up now, my lady," said Asta. Deirdre looked up at her. She took a handkerchief and wiped Deirdre's eyes. "Tell me about your family."

"My parents lived pretty far away...though not as far away as they are now. I moved a few months ago. They moved at the same time but just to another place. It was a 7-hour trip to visit them. But they were wonderful to me. They were paying for me to live alone. They were tough on me, but I guess it was just because they expected so much from me."

Deirdre thought back to their last conversation. It ended in a screaming match with both her parents, her dad in particular, saying they never appreciated her or told her they were proud of her. She hung up the phone and refused to answer. She had only texted since and she hadn't apologized. Now they'd never know she was sorry.

"My sister is the most wonderful girl in the world. She has cerebral palsy and she can't walk or talk. But she's perfect and I love her more than anyone. I was always a difficult child and with my sister I never made things easy on my parents. They'll never know that I'm sorry for the way I acted because I will never see them again."

Deirdre wanted to cry. Asta pressed the handkerchief to her eyes and grabbed her hand to hold it in place. This way Deirdre could cry without messing up the make up.
