Chapter 34:
Deirdre lost track of the number of tests Shield had subjected her to. The baby was gone. It was like it had never even been there. She'd saved the population of Asgard, but at what cost?
It had been an unwanted pregnancy, but she felt wrong without the child. It was proof of everything she had gone through. As much as she hated her time on Asgard and wanted nothing more than to escape from Loki, without the child she felt like nothing had happened.
Maybe it had all just been some sort of sick dream. But if that wasn't the case she wouldn't be in a Shield hospital. Steve hadn't left her side. He was like a little puppy.
Steve escorted her to the next test. "I'll wait here for you."
"I don't want to do another test, Steve."
"I know, Deirdre. But there's nothing I can do. I'm just your body guard here in case something happens."
"Thanks for that. When can I see Loki?"
"Why do you want to see him?" Steve looked uncomfortable every time she brought up Loki.
"I need answers. I can't move on until I get them. You understand don't you?"
"I have a museum exhibit about myself and there are history books that mention me. I definitely understand."
Deirdre gave Steve a quick, friendly hug. She walked into yet another sterile facility. She'd been here before. When she was at Shield before this was where they brought her to test her magic. Why do it again? She clearly could do magic. It was still unpredictable, but she had proven she could do it.
Maria Hill was sitting in the corner. Maria frequently attended Deirdre's tests. She always kept quiet. Whenever Deirdre asked her a question she told her to ask later.
She was going to play Shield's game. Do their tests, see her parents when they let her, be part of whatever cover up they wanted, and then she'd ask again if she could see Loki.
She needed to see him. Not because she wanted to, but because she needed answers. She'd been his prisoner, his captive, for five months. He'd saved her life. And she needed to know why. She needed to know every single lie, every single bit of logic behind what he did because if she wanted to move on with her life she needed answers.
The man who did her testing the previous time entered the room. His name was Holden Radcliffe. He started administering the tests exactly as he did the previous time.
"Try to summon my pen," he said.
Deirdre closed her eyes and tried to summon the pen. She looked for the deep magical desire and when she opened her eyes the pen was still in his hand.
"Try again, Deirdre."
She closed her eyes again. She focused on her breathing. She tried to picture herself holding the pen.
Nothing.
"It's okay, Deirdre. Go stand on the X. You know the drill. Try to stop the pillows from moving. They're not going to hit you."
"I know."
She looked at Maria. The woman kept her face expressionless. Deirdre hated all these hopeless tests. She'd had half a dozen blood tests in the last two days since she stopped Ragnarok. Shield was working overtime to handle the situation and find a place to house all these, for lack of a better words, Gods.
Deirdre stood on the X and waited for a series of throw pillows to be launched at her. Why a government agency had a pillow cannon she did not know. But it didn't matter.
