Chapter 40
"I'm not staying here Loki! I'm going to find Shield and I'm leaving. If you think for even one moment that I'm going to stay here, you've got another thing coming to you!"
Deirdre looked at herself in the mirror practicing her speech. She checked her cell phone for the millionth time. There was no service and her battery would probably die long before she could get service.
She looked around her newest temporary home. It was a one bedroom hut with a bath that needed water brought in from a well. Deirdre felt like a drifter with all this moving around. Loki had done nothing to keep her trapped in the hut. That job was taken on by Camilla and the other Children of Loki. They brought Deirdre and Loki to this place and wouldn't let her leave.
The door opened. Two women entered with buckets of water and poured them into the bath.
"Do you need help, Miss?" asked the older of the two women. She had a thick accent that Deirdre couldn't place.
"I need to find our where Loki is. That's the only help I could possibly need."
The older woman was about to speak when her younger companion cut her off. "I'm afraid he's currently busy with Lady Camilla and Lord Wieland." She spoke with a much less pronounced accent.
"Why do you think the world would be better off with Loki in charge?"
"Let me answer your question with another question, is the world really good right now?"
"That didn't answer my question. You just deflected it. Just because the world isn't perfect doesn't mean that somehow Loki is going to be your savior. He's not perfect either."
The older woman screamed, "King Loki will protect those that are loyal to him!" She threw the water from her bucket onto Deirdre, then dropped the bucket to the floor, and stormed out of the house.
Deirdre stood there in stunned silence, dripping wet. "Where can I find a towel?"
The young woman handed her a towel and Deirdre wiped her eyes. "You didn't have to be rude about it. I know Loki says you are his Queen, but until you can prove that you are worthy of him you're just a spoiled, privileged brat."
"Excuse me?" asked Deirdre. Normally anyone who followed Loki was fawning all over her to appease him. But Deirdre was shocked.
"You heard me. I've met plenty of people like you. You think the world is fine and dandy and refuse to look around you at the women like me who are selling myself to survive or the older people like Gerda who nearly died because she couldn't get enough food. You are lucky Loki took you in. But to me you're just a little privileged brat who can't see past your own nose."
"The only privilege I've had is the privilege of being beaten half to death and raped by a psychopathic God." The young girl looked taken aback. "Now I suggest you tell me where Loki is right this moment because I've had enough of being someone else's punching bag."
"I'm not telling you anything," said the younger girl. She then put her bucket of water on the floor and walked out.
Deirdre took a few deep breathes and walked out of the bathroom. She looked to see if there were any clean or at least dry clothes. Her shirt was uncomfortably tight, her blazer wasn't nearly warm enough, and her pants were sitting awkwardly.
When she couldn't find anything she stormed to the front door. A man was standing guard. "I need to see Loki," said Deirdre.
"He said you stay here," said the man.
"Well, when will be back?"
"He will be back when he's back." The man closed the door to the hut in her face.
