Chapter 37:

Deirdre struggled against Loki. "Let go of me! I have to go home!"

"No! We have to get our child back. I've worked too hard for this Deirdre!"

"Loki! Please, just let me go. Why are you doing this to me!"

Loki loosened his grip on Deirdre. She pulled back from him and stared at him with determination. All the suffering, all the fear, it was gone. She wasn't going to be his victim anymore.

"Deirdre, don't you want to get our child back?"

"The child that I didn't want?" Loki looked down at her as though he was ready to slap her. His hand reached out and in a flash she grabbed hold of his wrist. "Don't. Touch. Me. I'm done, Loki. I'm done being the person you can control with violence."

"Mmm, I like this feisty side of you, love," said Loki.

"Take me home, Loki," said Deirdre.

"I will, the second we get our child back." Loki freed himself from her grip and grabbed hold of her wrist. He pulled her towards a set of golden gates.

"That child is dead. We can't get it back."

"Yes we can. We're in Valhalla. The Hall of the Slain. We just have to plead with Odin and we can get our child back."

"How did we get here?"

"The child opened the portal from this end. It wants us to save it. I was trying to get here since it happened, but I couldn't get through till I had you. The child wants us here, together."

"And how do you propose we get home."

"I have a few more tricks up my sleeve love. Now how do we get this gate open?" Loki pressed his hands against the metal.

"It shall not open for you," said a voice.

An older man with a grey beard and an eye patch stood behind the gates.

"Father?" Said Loki.

"Yes, my son."

"Why won't it open for me?"

"The soul in question wants to see her. Not you."

"I want nothing to do with this," said Deirdre. "I just want to go home."

"I will send you home if you choose. But your child wants to see you. As a parent I recommend making your peace before it is too late. We rarely get second chances."

Deirdre looked at the old man. "Why do you think that I need to make peace?"

"I can see the hurt in your heart. It will only grow and shatter you, my child."

Deirdre looked at Loki. His eyes were pleading with her to see their child. Deirdre moved closer to the man. "I never wanted this child. I never wanted any of this."

"Fate is not something we choose. That's why it is called fate." Deirdre was trying to think. She pressed her head against the gates hoping to think. The cool metal felt nice against her skin.

Slowly the metal pulled away. She looked up. The gate was opening.

"I can see the choice in your heart," said the man. "Come. It will not be an easy journey."

"What about Loki?" She asked.

"He cannot come through. I'm sure he'll be here when you're ready to leave." The gates closed, locking Loki behind them. He looked at Deirdre with a burning desire.

She followed the old man down a wide hall. So wide that entire armies could walk through side by side.

"What kind of journey do I have to face?" She asked.
