Chapter 36

Deirdre looked through the glass at Loki. He was a far cry from the man she knew. His hair was wild and untamed and he walked around, bare-footed. He pressed his hand to the glass.

Deirdre simultaneously wanted to break down the glass and hug him and run out of the room screaming and she hated herself for that. She couldn't let him get to her. She couldn't let him have that power over her, again.

Deirdre turned away from Loki. If she couldn't see him maybe confronting him would be easier.

"I need to ask you a few questions, Loki."

"Please, Deirdre, look at me. I yearn to see you."

"Too bad." Deirdre sank down to the floor and leaned against the glass. If she was sitting she'd be less tempted to turn to him. "What did you lie to me about?"

"I didn't lie to you, my love."

"You did, Loki. I know you did. I know that I'm not half light elf or half Asgardian. I'm Midgardian."

"Okay. It was a lie, but it was for your own benefit to make you feel special."

"If you wanted me to feel special I don't think that was the way to do it. Maybe just tell me you think I'm special." Deirdre fought the urge to look up. She knew he was starring down through the glass at her.

"That was the only lie. I swear," said Loki.

"You told me I was immortal."

"As the King of Asgard I can grant immortality. So that wasn't a total lie."

"And how do you grant immortality."

"There's a test you have to take."

"That I might not have passed."

"Let's call it a half lie. I can't guarantee you'd have passed it. But if you did I could have granted you immortality and I'd have made sure the test was really easy. So, what else did I lie about. I'm sure you can't even name one other thing," said Loki confidently.

"I can't do magic. It was our unborn child that was performing all that magic." Deirdre hadn't admitted it to anyone but losing that child had messed her up. She didn't even want a kid, but it was proof of everything she'd experienced. Now she had a few scars on her back and a stupid gold wedding ring that she could probably sell.

"Okay, you got me on that one. That's two full lies and one half truth. So really only one and half lies."

"That's not how math works. It's still three lies."

"Debatable. But when else have I lied to you."

"You also told me that if your advisors knew that you'd kidnapped me or that I messed up their fancy dinner meeting with me and deemed me an unworthy Queen that they'd kill me. And yet when I met with them this morning and they said they'd have forced you to send me home."

"Okay, so I told you a few dozen lies. But who doesn't lie." Deirdre felt like laughing and crying. Loki stirred up the strangest mix of emotions inside her.

"I just want the truth. You owe me that after everything you put me through."

"What do you want to know?" said Loki softly.

"Why did you kidnap me? I'm not special. I'm just a normal midgardian...human. I'm just a normal human."

"I didn't entirely lie about why I kidnapped you. Your birth was recorded on Asgard. A prophecy had been made about you that only your presence on Asgard could stop Ragnarok when it started. I was fascinated. It was the first prophecy by the Norns every made about a Midgardian. So it was considered a big deal and my mother wanted to send the Asgardians to take you immediately. But the All-Father Odin stopped her."
