Chapter 38:
"Hello, mother," said the Other One The figure with auburn hair and pale skin turned to face Deirdre. She looked into piercing green eyes. Loki's green eyes. The other one's face was framed by the auburn hair. It looked like a darker version of her own. The other one was neither male nor female. Neither was it a child or an adult.
Deirdre pulled the baby into her arms closer and gripped the little girl's hand as she looked at the other one. The other one smiled at her kindly.
"Who are you?" said Deirdre.
"I'm your child."
"I don't have any children," said Deirdre softly.
"Not in this life. You miscarried me."
"Miscarried isn't the right word. My child stopped being." Deirdre touched her stomach softly. Any evidence of a child being there was gone.
"That's a good way to put it. I sacrificed myself to save your world. But in other timelines that didn't happen."
"What do you mean other timelines?"
"I'm every version of your child from every timeline."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"Look at the child in your arms." Deirdre looked at the small baby with dark brown hair and soft blue eyes. Her eyes. "Now look at the little girl." Deirdre looked at the little girl, who's hand she was gripped tightly. "They are me. Two versions of me. But I'm so much more than that."
"Are you some kind of god?"
"In a way I guess I am. I'm a constant in the multiverse. There are so many iterations of this world and every other for that matter. In every version of the world some form of me exists. Some would call me a fixed point. Other's would call me fate."
"Does that make me a fixed point too?"
"I really don't like the phrase fixed point or fate. It isn't the right word. I like to say constant being," said the Other One.
"You didn't answer my question. Am I a fixed point or as you call it a constant being?"
"In short yes. But it is more complicated than that."
"I'm not going anywhere so explain it to me," said Deirdre.
"You are a conduit, a channeling, if you will, to my constant state of being. I couldn't exist without you, but your continued state of existence after I come into being isn't necessary to put it bluntly. But I hate that explanation. It makes you seem unimportant, mother, and you are anything but unimportant." The Other One looked up at Deirdre with a big smile. Their eyes were nothing like Loki's piercing eyes past the color. They held a kindness, a desire to help.
"If you're a constant being why aren't you just a fetus or something,"
"I sacrificed myself to save your world in your timeline. You didn't want me. But in some timelines you and my father were happy. I survived. In others he sacrificed himself to save you. We lived together. I may be a constant, but the rest of the universe is not."
"Why are you a constant? Was I always fated to be kidnapped by Loki?"
"No, but you were always fated to end up on Asgard and you were always fated to end up with Loki. Whether it was through kidnap, willingly, it doesn't matter. Your fate was always going to lead you to Loki so I could come into being."
Deirdre sat next to the other one. The little girl sat down and the infant looked up with big blue eyes. "What's your name?"
"It depends."
