Chapter 35
Deirdre stepped off the plane, following Maria Hill. Steve followed closely behind. He was insistent on being her body guard for the time being, despite the fact that Loki was locked up.
She was a Shield Agent and she was going to figure out what was going on with the Asgardians. She had no clue what to do. Her duties as a Queen involved sitting in a room mostly alone for 5 months.
Maria escorted Deirdre into a room with Loki's advisors, or what remained of them. Only two of the warriors three had survived, along with Loki's Chief Advisor, the Grand Vizier Sigurd, and one of the older men on his council. The noble woman, Lady Sif, and another woman that Deirdre didn't recognize sat in the room.
Deirdre was surprised that Thor was no where to be seen. But she was here now. She was no diplomat. She was a film editor and a minimum wage theatre employee. She didn't know how to negotiate with Gods.
"Where's Loki?" asked Sigurd.
"Loki is in prison," said Deirdre softly. She was going to see him after this. Maria Hill said he was going to get a fair trial. But the verdict was all but decided.
"Why is Loki in prison? He served his sentence on Asgard. We accepted him as our king?" said Lady Sif.
Maria looked at them and said, "He kidnapped Deirdre. This is his second infraction against Earth and he's too dangerous to be out."
Everyone was starring at her. She looked down at the papers in front of her, avoiding eye contact. She didn't need their pity. They hadn't given it to her on Asgard. "No matter what he did I'm still the Queen and I'll do anything I can to help."
"My Queen, we had no idea Loki had kidnapped you," said Sigurd. "You have the council's sincerest apologies. Had we known we would have made him take you back to Earth immediately."
"Of course," she whispered. Of course he lied to her...again. Was anything out of that man's mouth true. Or was it all just lies.
Deirdre felt Steve's hand on her shoulder. She took a deep breath and a sip of water. She needed to compose herself. She could confront Loki about all these lies later. Right now she had to figure out what the Asgardians needed.
"It doesn't matter now." She paused. "Where's Thor?"
"We sent him away. He abandoned Asgard as far as we are concerned," said Sigurd.
She looked up at the group before her. "We need to know what needs to be done. Shield is prepared to help the people of Asgard settle onto and acclimate to Midgardian culture."
"We don't want to give up Asgard. We want to go back and fight for our home."
"That won't be possible. It took magic casters on both sides to get there in the first place."
"That's not true, my Queen," said one of the Warriors Three...Warriors Two now. "When the Midgardians came to get you they opened a portal without anyone on Asgard to open the other end."
Steve interjected, "We have one person on Earth who was able to do that but she did it as a courtesy to save Deirdre. I doubt she'll risk her life to go fight for a burning world."
"It's not possible to save Asgard. Unfortunately I think the mission to rescue me is actually what set off Ragnarok. Apparently there was a prophecy about me. Going back will just put everyone at risk and it's not something I'm willing to do. Too many Asgardians died because of this."
Sigurd slammed his fist on the table. Deirdre jumped. "I want to speak with King Loki to see what he wants to do!" he demanded.
"Well, you can't. King Loki is in prison and he's not going anywhere," said Deirdre.
