Chapter 15:

Saturday, December 14 - 8:00 AM

Deirdre awoke from her restful slumber and looked around the room. She was not in Asgard. She was not in Loki's bed. She was home or at least she was at her parent's house. She got up and noticed she was wearing the sheer nightgown that she'd put on the night before. Had it all been a dream, had she really been in Asgard?

Deirdre changed out of the nightgown and put on some blue jeans, and a t-shirt. She walked out of the room and went to the kitchen. She heard her mother say, "Dee, your cinnamon rolls are in the oven. I'm so glad you came home." Her mother hugged her.

Her mother looked happier than she had in ages. Smiling, happy and relaxed. Deirdre took the cinnamon rolls out of the oven. It was just after 8:00 in the morning. She went back to her bedroom to grab some shoes. She was going to make the most out of whatever time she had here.

She saw a piece of parchment on her nightstand. There was a note written in green ink.

Hello Love,

I thought I'd give you a present for whatever this Christmas holiday you Midgardians seem so obsessed over. I am giving you a day on Midgard with your family. I will come collect you at midnight. Christmas is only a few days away. Make the most of it. I will see you soon.

~Loki

Deirdre cringed at the note. One day with her family. He was right, she needed to make the most of it. As she walked into the kitchen her mom, dad, and even her elder brother were sitting at the table. They were all together. She hugged each member of her family and then ran to her sister's room to hug her.

They needed to make plans. Deirdre suggested that they go see a movie. So they decided on the first show of the day to see Frozen. Then they would play monopoly and maybe even a game or two of cribbage. It would be just like old times.

But then again, nothing was the same anymore. She was now married to a god. She sat and listened as her family told her of their miraculous fortune. Her entire family had received notice that their debts had been paid off, not just her parents and her brother, but all her cousins as well. The whole family was debt free. And on top of that about two weeks ago, the day she had said goodbye to them, they'd all received cases upon cases of jewels and gold and money. The family was filthy rich.

The whole family, her wonderful sister, Theresa, included got into the car to see the movie. But something seemed off. They all seemed like they were in a daze. Even her sister seemed to notice it, clutching onto Deirdre like her life depended on it.

"It will be okay Teta," Deirdre whispered as her sister hugged her. Her family seemed to know she was there but they were quite confused at times.

Deirdre loved the movie. So did her family. She adored the music in it. Next the whole family went to get lunch. Deirdre didn't realize how much she missed chicken noodle soup until she finished a bowl of it and ordered another.

They went home and cracked open a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Deirdre never liked puzzles much but she sat there making funny jokes about how she couldn't be related to them since she was the only one bad a puzzles. It was a joke she'd made 1000 times before. But suddenly a pit formed in her stomach.

That joke wasn't funny anymore. She wasn't like them. She was more alien than human. No wonder she had always been so different from her family. No wonder they'd never understood her. Maybe Loki wasn't the monster. After all, he'd given her the best gift ever, a day with her family. Maybe she was the monster. After all, she was an alien just like him.
