Emperton?
My mind struggled to comprehend it.
Emperton.
That was most definitely not Asheville. And it was not with my boys.
"There's been a mistake," I said, "There must have been. I'm with the Academy, with those guys-"
A thin, overly polite smile gently came across the woman's lips. I felt like punching it off. I had to be with them. Not to some other place however far away.
"There has been no...Mistake, Miss Sorenson. You're on the bus to Emperton. The civilian bus."
My eyes narrowed on her. If that was the civilian bus, then...
"What bus is theirs, then?"
"That is no business of yours-"
Oh for god's sake.
"Is it an Academy bus?" I snapped. I needed to get to the point. Mumbles were echoing from the families and people behind me. Some were cursing, some were groaning from what I assumed were injuries that needed to be tended to better.
Her eyebrows raised, and then lowered again. The cool mask returned.
"Oh, of course. Yes. The Blackbourne team. You're their little project."
"Okay, lady, I don't know what you think but I'm getting on that bus whether you like it or not." My voice raised close to a shout and I caught something from the corner of my eye.
The guys. They'd pushed off of the bus and were coming towards us.
Mr. Blackbourne said a quick word to two soldiers that attempted to block them. They shrugged and allowed the guys to pass.
North led up front, and the look in his eyes were so annoyed I was scared myself. The representative woman didn't even flinch.
"What the fuck's happening, Baby?"
"They're putting me on a different bus!"
"Like hell they fucking are," Gabe growled, stepping forward. The bodyguards beside the representative followed suit until they were either side of her. I swear I could see a 'mess with me and you'll pay' look behind their protective visors.
"Step back, Mr. Coleman."
Mr. Blackbourne replaced him.
"I'm sure there's some sort of...Middle ground we could come to," he reasoned.
I gave a hopeful glance to the woman.
She had a thoughtful look.
"I'm going to be honest with you, Blackbourne. We could make an exception for her. There are very few Academy members that made it, and there is room on the vehicle. But..."
Mr. B tilted his head slightly.
"Go on."
"But you Academy members are trained in combat. She would be in danger there. Much more danger than with the civilians."
"What exactly do you have in store for us?" Kota's voice rang out.
"Exterminators of the ill. Hunters, if you will. The government and the Academy doctor have already seen the full extent of this disease. And we cannot allow it to go further."
Dr. Green frowned.
"You have soldiers. People better trained, people-"
He was stopped short.
