Chapter 18 (Axi)-
We were nearing the place that was supposedly the location of half our team members. You know...fifty percent of the team. Typically, fifty percent would fail you, but whatever.
I sighed as we neared the turn on the dirt path through an incredibly dense forest. That meant, we'd have to leave the car behind. The one we rented. And with my luck, it wasn't going to make it back.
Irene parked on the side of the road, seeing as I was right.
"Those two idiots!" She exclaimed suddenly. The whole car ride had been so quiet the sudden outburst made me jump.
I bowed my head, "Ready?"
"When I see those two I'm gonna-"
"I'll take that as a yes," I said while opening the door, eager to get this done and over with already. We started down the path, a fuming Irene behind me. I was almost tempted to tell her to take a chill pill before remembering what happened last time I told a girl that. It...didn't go too well.
I usually walk behind everyone but in this instance, I wasn't sure "get in front of me" would give the best reaction. She just might literally kick my butt so I just kept quiet. I didn't know why she was so mad in the first place, but I had a feeling I was going to find out when we saw...well that wasn't what I was expecting.
"Irene," I slowed down. She didn't, "Irene!" She ran into me.
"What!" She demanded, "I thought-" She stopped her sentence when she saw a cuffed hand to my ear.
She didn't even get the chance to listen before we saw their truck fly through the air, followed by three more SUV type cars.
"And to think I was actually going to get a break today," I muttered as I felt my adrenaline began to rise.
"Who did they manage to piss off this time?" Irene said with a baffled laugh.
They were only half a mile, and closing in fast. I felt my back; good. I hadn't forgotten my weapon. I unslung it, spinning it before steadying it in my hands in Sniper mode.
"Stun rounds?" Irene read the holographic warning that popped up above the scope.
"I may be impulsive, but I'm not stupid," I looked at her. She made a face that even an amiture could read: that was debatable.
"Sure," She said, despite what she was obviously thinking.
I put my eye to the scope and waited for the vehicles to pop up the next hill. I only had three chances; only three hills, after all.
"Now!" Irene ripped my focus to her.
"Shut up, girl!" By the time I regained my bearings they were already gone, "Damnit!" Now they had to be closer to a quarter mile.
I waited again; this time, she was completely silent, thank God. I followed the SUV's invisible path-upon seeing it's trajectory, blah blah blah ect., I could tell where to line up my shot. Yes, all in the matter of less than a second. No, please; hold your applause. I insist!
I pulled the trigger. I was only satisfied with myself when I heard what happened next; multiple collisions, followed by trees collapsing. Since the road was too small for our little rental car, I knew that if I took out the lead chaser, I would take them all out.
"So much for stun rounds," Irene rolled her eyes.
"Oh," I stared dumbfounded at my sniper, "I forgot about that."
"Oh," She mimicked.
The next hill, we saw that Scav hadn't slowed down...why hadn't they slowed?
I turned to Irene, who said what I was thinking, "Run?" Neither of us waited for my answer. We were already halfway to the car when Scav's truck was on top of us.
"Get in!" A familiar voice shouted. So it really was them!
"What?" Irene sounded surprised.
"No time to explain! Princess, Axi; in!" Scav yelled from the bed of the truck as, they stopped a little ahead of us. We didn't hesitate. We hopped in and not a second after my head was filled with stars from my head hitting the back from the sudden acceleration.
"What, no seatbelts?" I said, not really caring.
"What are you, a safety inspector?"
"No. Stop!" I said, remembering the rental. Too late. I saw it go by, then saw it no longer.
"Do you plan on apologizing to them?" It was Layric this time, sitting in the passenger seat.
"Have you tried that yet?"
"Actually, we have," Scav said From the rear of the truck.
"Actually, I tried. He messed it up!" Layric interjected.
"Shut up and drive, moron!" Irene hit the back of the drivers seat. I looked back and saw that Scav was right. If we stopped, they would've caught us. More were on our tail.
