Chapter 4 (Irene)-
I simply couldn't believe it, I was finally at Haven! I was still astounded that Claren had given me individual attention. Mom and Dad don't seem to like the whole situation too much however, that guy who oddly went by the name Scavenger; only showed up because he was delivering some bounty Dad had supposedly set. Mom was pretty upset about that, so they both returned to Atlas to speak about it and attend some other "urgent" matter. Which to be honest, kind of upsets me, I wish they'd stay here a couple of days. Oh well, at least I was finally home free!
Me and every other first year student were gathered in the auditorium which was part of the main building down a series of hallways. The room itself was a spacious flat room that seemed to have nothing in it other than a couple of wooden chairs scattered about in the cobwebbed corners and a couple of portable bookshelf stands in various random areas. Perhaps they left them there on purpose?
I ended up claiming some area towards the wall opposite of the entrance. I unpacked a few blankets and a pillow and laid under the blankets with my head on the pillow; staring at the ceiling awkwardly. I didn't know anyone here, and my few friends were all the way back in Atlas; that was one thing I was surly going to miss. Well, I was sure I could make new friends! Not everyone here could be as unsettling as Scavenger and Layric. And as odd as that Axi dude was, well; he admittedly seemed nice enough, I think I would talk to him tomorrow.
After staring at the ceiling and being lost in thought for what must've been hours, due to the crowd of students quieting down and going to sleep. I glanced over my right shoulder for no particular reason and happened to see a student suspiciously creeping out into the hallway and down a corner. Wondering what he could be doing; I grabbed one of my swords and tiptoed past the minefield of sleeping students to follow the guy. I've always been a little noesy, I admit. I followed his footsteps as slowly as I could, but feared he was already out of sight. I got around the corner just in time to see the side of his face as he curved down this one-way hall. I didn't know him, but I saw him talking to some other students when I was setting up my blankets. I heard his name in the conversation; Pemor, I think it was. From what I saw of his armor, it was a regular black undersuit with a bright red chestpiece and other miscellaneous armor pieces; didn't catch his weapon though. I sped walked over to the one way turn Pemor went down. Once I got to the end, I noticed the hallway was unusually dark. I suddenly felt worried about going any further.
WOOSH! Pemor's fist with spiked knuckles swung directly towards my face. I jumped back a foot and intercepted his fist with my katana, which was still in its sheath since I had been carrying it in my hand. An elbow slammed into Pemor's jaw, causing him to stagger into the curved wall. I darted my head to see who the owner of the elbow was surprised by the answer; it was Scavenger.
"You're dead!" Pemor grunted, cracking his jaw into place. He swung a fist at Scavenger, who had stepped in front of me. The spiked knuckles pounded against Scavenger's Chest, which merely caused him to widen his stance. "Ahhh! The hell kind of armor do you have under that vest?" Pemor whined while clutching his fist. Scavenger lightly smiled and pulled his hatchet from his belt. He pointed the butt of the hilt towards Pemor and I saw a capsule open up immediately followed by an orange-ish gas spraying out towards the front of Pemor's feet.
"Do yourself a favor and step back," Scav said, half eyeing me. Whatever that stuff did, I didn't want to be in its radius so I paced back a few feet. Scavenger slashed his axe on the stone ground, causing it to spark. He front rolled away with the force of his sinuous swing right as the gas exploded. In reaction, Pemor flew back and impacted against the upper wall. Scavenger got up from his front roll and spun around, charging Pemor once again. Pemor slouched up off the ground only to be grabbed by the neck and choke slammed back into the ground by Scavenger.
"What's going on?"
"Are those two fighting?"
I heard a couple of curious students who managed to sneak up behind me mutter as we all watched the fight. Scavenger lifted his free hand up and jabbed Pemor in the face. Many students gasped as he retracted his fist and readied another punch.
"Stop! You're going to kill him!" I demanded. Scavenger relaxed his fist an glared back at me.
"He was trying to kill you," Scavenger griped, tilting his head towards Pemor's shiny spiked knuckles.
"Well, he didn't, I'm fine," I said back, "I think I should find the headmistress, she'll handle this," I stated as I made my way around the two of them. I whipped around the turning point of the hallway only to nearly butt heads with Headmistress Claren.
"Oh, ugh...Headmistress! Glad you're here because-"
"I saw precisely what happened as I made my way down here, I would've stepped in but, Pemor here appears to be subdued," she said disturbingly calm. Pemor weakly tilted his beaten face towards Claren as Scavenger dropped him like a heavy sack.
I saw a flash in the shadows over Claren's shoulder. I shifted my head to where I could see them, then focused my eyes. I made out two shadowy figures...one appeared to be a human, and the other...a beowolf? No, that couldn't be right, they were just...standing there. I rubbed my eyes shut and both figures were gone when I looked again. Was I seeing things?
"This filth was going to kill her!" Scavenger broke the silence and nodded towards me.
"Well I'm glad you were here to intervene, I shall handle it from here. Pemor, pull yourself up and follow me," Pemor silently slouched himself off the tattered floor and stumbled after Ms.Claren, "Now students... nothing more to see here, please head back to sleep, you'll need it for tomorrow," she uttered sternly as she turned and strode off into the dark, followed by Pemor, who could hardly stand. Still, he followed her obediently.
The crowd of students looked at each other with confused looks then walked back to the auditorium. Scavenger gave me a weird stare then looked away as he strutted off behind the other students. I decided to make my way back to the auditorium with everyone. The auditorium was filled with groups of students standing around scratching their heads and questioning each other.
"What just happened, did those two guys get in a fight?"
"I don't know dude, I saw Pemor and that girl heading out and that Scavenger guy practically ran after them!" I heard a conversation between a group of boys.
"Nah, you guys got it all wrong, That Pemor dude attacked the girl and that dude with the hat stepped in," explained one student who clearly arrived early.
I saw that Layric guy, who was a few sleeping bags down from me, sitting up on his bag and eyeing down Scavenger, who just shook his head in response and collapsed on his sleeping bag. Layric just looked away and laid back down, closing his eyes. Does he sleep with that hood and mask on?
I stepped onto my blanket, sitting down and leaning back. I exhaled a long sigh, This is going to be an eventful year.
