Luke is messing with his bracelet, like typical Luke. He hasn’t seen me yet and I am glad, because I can’t be arsed with awkward glances and waves. I take my time to get to the entrance door.

I enter and Luke looks up to me. He smiles and then stands up to pull me a seat out. I mutter a tiny thanks and he just shrugs. We sit in silence for a minute or two, and then he offers me a drink and asks what I want.

“Um” I say “Hot chocolate, please” I say and offer him money, he ignores it and just nods. He goes to pay and I sigh. It’s so damn awkward and I hate it. Luke returns and passes me my drink, while he takes a sip of his mocha.

“So…” He says “How’re you?” He asks after several sips of his hot drink.

“Good” Shit “You?” I ask and I sound so sad and desperate. He sounds broken but not like me. I am broken. Real broken.

“I’m…” He says, then he furrows his eyebrows and bites his lip. He has a lip ring in, which is kind of cute “I’m… okay, sort of, I guess…” He looks away from me and sort of sighs.

“Um…” I say, unsure of what to say “Okay” I don’t know what to say now so I just sigh and look outside. There is a couple outside, arguing, and a guy on his phone, while sipping a hot drink. Luke is messing with his bracelet again.

“Look” Luke says after a few more minutes of silent awkwardness “I know you’re mad with me, and I deserve it, but I don’t want this to be awkward because I don’t like that and I don’t think you do, either” He sounds stubborn, yet soft. I sigh and close my eyes for a minute, running my hand in my hair that isn’t in my beanie. I shrug.

“I dunno” I say and Luke looks at the table. His phone is on it and is locked, along with a few pennies and a receipt.

“I bought you this” He says, reaching for his pocket, and handing me a box. It’s quite small and has a cute, little bow on it.
