When I say seconds, it was like an hour. But it felt like seconds. I went back into the room, and thought nothing of the call really. Motorways always had bad reception, everyone knew that, I convinced myself. It wasn't until I got a call from an unknown number that I started to really worry. I answered the number with curiousness, and the connection wasn't great either.
"Hello?" I echoed into the phone. It took a few seconds for whoever was on the end of the line to reply.
"Please state your relation to a Luke Hemmings" The voice stated.
"Girlfriend" I stated back "I'm his, um, girlfriend" I spoke with a heap of awkwardness.
"I'm unfortunate to say this-" Thats when my heart dropped. My dizzy head went numb. Everything went in slow motion. I could almost hear the callers breath hit the phone when he spoke. I tried to calm down. "Luke has been in an accident" I bit my lip. Hard. Trying hard not to cry. "His mother and him, this was the most recent call on his phone. He is in Manchester Royal Hospital. He, um, well, isn't great. I think if you can, you should get here as quick as possible"
Without a second thought or even a "Goodbye"
I hung up the phone and ran into the room Ash and Mike were in, trying not to faint or fall. They were arguing over something stupid that I really didn't care about, when they saw me they immedietly stopped.
"Whats wrong?" Ashton asked in a hushed, soft voice.
"You okay?" Mike asked, slightly louder.
"We need to get to Manchester Royal Hospital. Now. Luke's been in an accident. Can one of you drive?" I managed to let these words fall out of my mouth like parachute jumpers.
"Um, yeah, sure I can" Ash said, and they both, almost simutaniously stood up. They didnt even bother to turn off the TV or the game console, before we were sat inside Ashton's silver car, me in the front, Mike in the back.
For the first 20 minutes or so we said absoloutely nothing. All I could think about was Lukes soft, angelic face, just laying there, with tubes coming out everywhere from his fragile body. His hair in a mess, which if he was better, he would fix almost immedietly. With a blanket over him and boxes and machines beeping around him.
"He's gonna be okay ya'know" Ashton tried to end the silence. I just bit my lip and nodded. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Ashton look at Mike and pull a face indicating he wanted him to join him in trying to comfort me. Michael nodded, biting his lip.
"Yeah, he'll be fine, you know Luke, he will be strong" Michael tried to help. He really did. Ashton shot him a look saying he wasn't very pleased with his comforting. Michael just shrugged, unsure of what to say or do right now. I bet he was really bad in these kind of situations.
I just sat there, for about another 30 minutes, when we arrived at the Hospital.
